Why does it need to grow in water? Do wild paddy or its ancestors grow in swamps originally?

Paddy usually refers to the PLACE aquatic crops like rice are grown. It's a field with earthen barriers around it, and sometimes through it to be sure that water circulates slowly through all parts of the growing area: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paddy_field The water is usually only a few inches deep.

Some website titles may make "Paddy" sound like the name of a plant (http://assets.panda.org/downloads/sri_method_paddy_cultivation.pdf ), but these refer to any plant grown IN a paddy.

Although the most common plant grown in a paddy is probably rice, any wetland plant could be grown. Since the paddies are flooded part of the year, only plants that have adapted to living in a wet environment should be grown. The rest of the year (for sowing seeds or harvesting), the barrier around the paddies can be breached, allowing the water to drain.
