A half decent driving instrutor will first of all pick you up in the car you will be learning to drive, he/she will then drive to a quiet(ish) area to let you get into the driving seat he/she then will go through all the controls with you whilst the engine is off.
They then will let you start the car instruct you on how to pull away and then let you put it into gear and drive off, or stall, as most people will do on the first time of getting behind the wheel.
you might even get to change up in to second all going well on your first lesson BUT do not get too upset if you dont get out on the road straight away, the driving instructor is seeing your capabilities without causing a danger to the other road users.
Have fun, and good luck

If you get stressed stop the lessons.
Just do as your told, even if it seems wrong and you will get there.
Average is about 40 hours.

It took me around five months to pass and i think that's fairly average some people can do it in less some alot more.
The lessons will depend on the instructor you have as they all have different styles. For my first lesson i basically went over the theory with pretty pictures of how the car worked. I.e how the clutch works and which stick is the indicator. Then i drove about a mile home at about five miles an hour :-) Probably from then on if your fairly confident you'll spend 90% of your lesson time just driving around getting to know the basics, road signs etc. After about 2 months I took my theory test (you can take this whenever you like before your actual test) and around the same time started learning the specific things you have to do i.e. parallel park, reverse round a corner, bay park and turn in the road. From about a month before my test we just used to drive to the test centre where I would be taking it and go over the roots the testers used and practise a couple of turns in the road etc each time.
Driving instructors are used to teaching alot of different people and they don't expect you to be able to just get in and do it, if your not feeling confident they'l take you somewhere to practice and there not going to mind if u get abit annoyed at yourself.
From the timing point of view you can always start now and see how it goes, if your taking longer to get the hang of it than expected take a break. I took a couple of months out because of exams and it doesn't take long to get back into it.
Plus one final point if you don't seem to be getting anywhere after a couple of months try switching driving instructor, i had two different ones and the second was alot better than the first.

The instructor wants you to pass you want to pass so what is your worry?
It sometimes happens that an instructor or learner do not get on very well. My instructor(a woman) was fine with me but my wife could not stand her

Well, your stress levels might shoot up!!
Seriously, learning to drive can be fun. Everyone is different in the time they take - I had about 24 lessons. It really helps if you have a patient partner or friend whose car you can practise in!!
Be careful with your tummy though - an emergency stop would not be good for the baby. Check with your midwife? I'm sure if will be OK if you're careful.
Good luck - I hope you get your test before baby arrives!!

My instructor said it would take about 30 lessons but I was on 20 and still clueless....i stopped taking lessons cuz I really hated my instructor and he put me off driving...Expect him/her to drive you to an industrial park or emptyish area and tell you all about the gears and buttons and stuff...then let you have a go starting the car and moving a bit then stopping...there's really nothing to worry about cuz he has the pedals at his feet too and if you do anything wrong with the steering wheel he just yanks at it and does it himself. Good luck, hope you have a better experience than I did xx

they say twice as many lessons as your age, but i think that is a bit of a marketing swindle. I took 14 lessons to pass my test, but it depends on you aptitude for it. I wouldnt count on passing before you drop, but you have to start somewhere.

I have heard that a rough guide is that it will take about 1 lesson for each year of your life, so approximately 24 lessons for you. This is only an estimate of course, some people will learn more quickly, others will take longer. Good luck!
