You need to get out more.
You also need to understand that atheists in general just go about their lives and religion plays no part in it at all.
Religion does not come up in conversation, as, as far as we are concerned, it may as well not exist.
My guess is that you are in the US, a most backward country when it comes to such delusions. If you had any experience at all about Europe, you would understand that 76% of the population is atheist. This number grows as the older generation dies off.
Very soon, the bulk of Europe will be totally atheist.
When I lived in the UK, everyone I knew was an atheist. There was ONE religious freak in the community. That's ONE. Just the ONE. Only ONE.
Churches are empty. Some abandoned and derelict, most being used for other purposes - art galleries, flea markets, coffee shops, community centres, exhibition halls, etc.
In the UK, no-one discussed religion. It wasn't a part of normal life. Therefore, no-one risked being persecuted by religious-freaks; no-one was in danger of losing their job because the business owner was a worshipper - he probably was an atheist too..
I currently live in the Philippines, where the Spanish forcibly introduced Catholicism on an indigent population that didn't want it but, as in S/America, it was a case of convert or die.
I freely admit that I am an atheist when the subject comes up. Otherwise, the subject just does not arise.
I am not interested in converting everyone here to atheism (even though I have done so, very easily). They can live a life of fantasy if they wish and I don't care.
However, here we get asked questions such as this. So I answer.
If you see atheism as you state, it is because you are probably in the US, where, to admit being an atheist is akin to admitting that one is a child-rapist or, at best, a homosexual.

We are not the type that preaches in the road for our beliefs. And many places do not acknowledge or even respect atheists. And now working in a Muslim country, I won't dare risk my life for this. For Christians, dying proclaiming the Word of God is martyrdom. For us, it's suicide. :)

Locksmith, I don't know where you got those rumors. But it sure is lame like what you believe in. I think you are just bitter.

Well, we don't speak in churches, or rant at streetcorners... What'd you have in mind? I've got no problem discussing my views in person if the occation arises. I just don't have a need to rave to people about it.

What gave you that idea?

If the conversation was to come up elsewhere, I would speak out and have done before, but I won't ram my views down someones throat.

what are you joking??

who's telling people that they can't pray in public?

who's trying to ban the pledge of allegience due to the mention of God?

who's firing teachers for merely having a bible in their possesion at school and who's suspending kids who pray quietly to themselves?

who's producing movie after movie that mocks God and christians? and didn't that comedian woman get away with telling Jesus to go "suck it"???

who's able to produce offensive art that douses christian symbols in urine and smear feces on their portraits?

who's lobbying to have "In God we trust" removed from our currency?

you can say "there is no God" at school and nothing will happen, but if a christian says "Jesus Christ is our Savior" they can be suspended.

but poor little you can't speak in public?

pass the kleenex!!!!!

It's not that we're AFRAID of mentioning. But atheism is not like religions, and there's really nothing to talk about. We don't go around with "Im an atheist" on our foreheads. If people asks me, i will definitely say it. If they dont, i dont go around blurting " I'm an atheist!!!" halfway throughout a conversation. really.
