Oh, that's very difficult, sending good thoughts. Yes, I do think you should ask him, because sometimes not knowing can be almost as bad as losing the relationship.
I understand that you don't want to hurt more, and you could ask your ex to tell you but to be kind too. he might not agree to tell you, or he might not exactly know why, which could be even more difficult.
Whatever the reaosn he finished the relationship, there are thousands of great men out there and you will get through this and find someone even better!
