I highly doubt it is a Gauguin...If it is, expect to not have to work for the rest of your life. But this is highly doubtful.
The paint is a good way to get a sense of how old the painting is. If there has not been any restoration, the paint should be cracked and yellowed. 93' is not very helpful, but during 1893, Impressionism was in full force, so this might also be a sign of it's age. To see if this is an Impressionism piece, look to see if there is thick dabs of paint, not carefully mixed, realistic blending; this is just one sign, though not every artist in the late 1800s were Impressionists.
The easiest way would be to take the painting to an art appraiser. They'll be able to tell you everything, but if this is not an available option, try looking up major periods in art history and see if your painting matches any of them.

That 2d humorous tale i heard in a somewhat distinctive version. it became a pair of farmer. he became chatting with some guy and he asked him approximately his pigs, rabbits, and cows i think of it became... then he asked why the "droppings" look distinctive and yeah u understand the rest :D enormous call*****
