I can believe that religious education conducted by a public institution would cause people to become atheists.
The US public schools do not directly teach religion.

I'm not sure where some of the answerers above me went to school, but in my high school we had units on all the major religions in world history class and throughout what was called social studies classes in the middle grades. I cannot recall a teacher ever saying "this religion is wrong, and this one is right."

the specific class called "religious education" is not sanctioned in public schools.
if there is a "world religions" class then its part of social science and doesnt usually get taught until high school.

What I would like to see is that churches, synagogues and masjids are able to rent classroom spaces BEFORE the start of school to offer a religion class. Atheists too could rent and teach their kids morality or civics. That way, the separation of Church and State would remain and schools would have more revenue. That would also eliminate Sunday schools and kids would have more time on weekends.
Religion/spirituality/moral teachings are an important aspect of one's education. One of the problem that we have in schools is that there are no moral teachings, and kids fall easy prey to a culture of drugs and premarital sex.

no. the majority don't want religion taught unless they can teach christianity as truth, which isn't allowed.
i think, however, an objective course on all main religions should be taught in school
