A universal motor differs in that
the field core is laminated
The field winding has fewer turns to reduce inductance
High permeability silicon steel is used to reduce hysteresis loss.
A compensating winding is added in series with the armature to reduce inductance

The changes are necessary but make for a less efficient motor than a DC motor.

A DC motor has "brushes" so will work on AC or DC. A "normal" motor is an induction motor which only works on AC. DC motors are smaller in size for the same power and can easily be speed controlled.

There are no differences. It has same principle and cosntruction. except that in application DC series motor is a large motor for a heavy load aplication. while universal motor can either plug in AC and DC, its uses are in small tools and appliances such as drill, planer, some washing machines.

I would have to say that DC runs on DC current. Universal can probably run on both AC and DC currents.

DC motor runs off DC current,
universal runs off ac or DC,

Look on Wikipedia under electric motor. A universal motor also runs on AC as well as DC.
