how many days prior to the travelling date can you purchase a train ticket?

You can buy a ticket at the last minute, directly from the train station, but you won't be certain to get one. You might be lucky and get a hard seat, which is fine for short trip, but on long journeys. it will give you a glimpse of what hell must feel like. Booking is usually preferred, especially if you know for sure when your travel dates are.

Should buy them at least 5 days in advance just in case.

I think it is 10 days. They change it during Spring Festival though, they extend it to make the chaos more orderly. Sometimes, you can only buy a one way ticket out of the city you are leaving and you need to try to buy the return only when you get to your destination. Scalpers... err umm... I mean ticket brokers, are usually helpful and for a 100 rmb transaction fee, a hotel will get what ever ticket you need and deliver it to your room. Good luck and Happy New Year!
