Hebrews 11:1-40 going into chapter 12:4, we have a greater context of the definition of faith, 11:1 and the requirement and blessing of faith, 11:6. The notable points of actions that God deemed worthy to be used to show what faith does is within the remainder of the text. That being sacrifice of self. The final point of the passage is that of Jesus, the author and finisher of faith. He faithfully endured to the point of the shedding of His own blood, the ultimate sacrifice of self.
Christians are asked to do some odd things according to this world. We use a strange vernacular that the world does not understand. We are called to live at peace with our neighbor even when they hate us. We are told that we will be a peculiar people; one that is bought with a price, to be enslaved to a spiritual king and high priest. The world should look at our oddity and be forced into the recognition that there is a difference in a life of faithful actions. For we are not saved by works, but grace, and our works shows our faith. With out our physical works of faith there is no faith.
Jesus showed His faith by His work on the cross.
I pray this helps.

In my Christian life, one of the most profound things I have learned is what pleases God. What brings pleasure to God? Himself. God is primarily concerned with His own glory and fame. Is God merely a self-centered, egotistical maniac? No! God has a perfectly legitimate reason to be this way; namely He is God. That's all there needs to be said. If God were to be concerned about the glory of anyone or anything else, He would not be God in the first place. That object or that person would be God instead. Much could be said about this and I don't want to stray from the question you asked. So, I would simply recommend that you consider listening to an excellent audio teaching by John Piper. Piper is a well-respected evangelical teacher based in Minneapolis, MN. I hope you enjoy it. The title of the message is "Discern what pleases God: Himself." See the link below.
As noted in earlier answers, Hebrews 11 tells us that without faith it is impossible to please Him. Faith is a personal trust and dependence on Him. It includes believing in God also. Pleasing God by just living a good life is not faith in God. It is faith in myself. It is a way of living that says: "See, I can do it by myself and I don't need you." The reality is that I cannot do it by myself. I cannot live for 1 minute without sinning. It's impossible. But if I lay aside personal effort and trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ as sufficient payment for my sins, this is the greatest step of personal faith I can take. Human effort is not only futile but it also attempts to rob God of His glory. It is pride and therefore, it is sin.

Because we have to believe in God. For Jesus said that he was the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through him. To please God, we have to have faith and believe in him. Just living a good life is not really a good life without Jesus.

Another way to ask your question is whether salvation is based on one's good deeds or on the grace and mercy of God. As one other post here states, be thankful that faith is all God asks for. If it fell to us to act perfectly (which IS God's standard), we would all fail miserably.
Salvation is based only on God's mercy to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus, who took the penalty for our sinfulness.
Please do not resist the call to faith.

A good life by whose standards?
Hypothetically, what would you think of an intelligent life-form you created, which shunned and ignored you from the very moment you gave it life? Would you think, "Well, it has its reasons"?

God is an absolutely HOLY Being, perfect in any way. Why would anyone's merely "good" life please Him. Partial credit doesn't fly with God.
I can't offfer God any performance that could possibly measure up to His standards, so all He asked was that I would believe Him and trust His Word. He even gives me the faith according to Ephesians 2:9.
Honestly, I think you should be very happy that ALL God wants from you is faith. If he wanted perfect goodness....Your goose would be cooked!!! Ya Know!!!
For the past 37 years I have benefited from God's love, goodness and help. I'm so glad He doesn't ask for something I can never deliver. He is such a kind God.

Hey brother:)
Praise the Lord for making a way for us to truly please and know Him.
Our God is in an unseen realm. To know and realize Him requires Faith.
The word tells us that without faith it is impossible to please God. How can we please God without first knowing Him? We know Him by our spirit because our God is Spirit. He has made us with a spirit that matches Him and has the capacity to contain and experience Him.
If you ask me where my spirit is I cannot point to it or show you it because it too is in the unseen spiritual realm where God exists. It transcends the visible superficial things. In most cases its the things in the unseen realm that are more substantial and real. Visible things are really just a shadow and is the tip of the iceburg of whats truly taking place on the earth.
To live a mere good live is to life for ourselves..this leads to self righteousness. To truly please God is to live by faith where He is. Its by faith that we can open up our being to Him and allow Him to impart more of Himself to us. Impart His heart's desires.. His choices.. His will.. His ways.. His preferences and tastes to us. Our spirit is such a magnificient part of us and sometimes is not always understood. But this part of us knows God and wants God and is one with God.
Corinthians reveals to us that " he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit"
May we really labour to come to the Lord in the word. Faith comes by the hearing of the Word of God. Through His word He is able to speak something of Faith into our being .. imparting more of Himself as Faith to us.. giving us a spirit of faith from which we not only please God.. but worship Him too in spirit and truthfulness.
Its such a blessing to have this sort of way to live. Sometimes we thing we know too much and are so capable.
One person wrote this in a hymn I enjoyed recently.
She said that she would rather walk in the dark with God than Go alone in the Light.. She'd rather walk by faith with Him than Go alone by sight.
That where He leads she will follow and trust in Him in sweet repose.. That in every hour in perfect peace.. she'll sing.." He knows.. He knows"
May we have such a trusting kind of life. Faith tells the Lord that we trust in Him and not ourselves to live this life OF faith.
Great Q dear
Your sister

Honey, to please GOD you must accept HIM as your SAVIOUR into your heart. KNOW that HE died for your sins, and that HE will make you NEW again. Living a good life is a good thing but.........to gain the knowledge of going to HEAVEN you must ACCEPT JESUS into your heart. You say a very short prayer, JESUS, I KNOW I HAVE SINNED. I ACCEPT YOU INTO MY HEART AND I WANT TO LIVE FOR YOU THE REST OF MY DAYS. PLEASE COME INTO MY HEART AND HELP ME TO LIVE AS YOU WOULD WANT ME TOO. THANK YOU, JESUS, AMEN. I said this prayer in 1978 and have been a Christian for that long. I did "stray" for some years but "came back" to my belief system. It took the death of my Mother to come back to HIM. Sometimes that is what it takes, a death of a loved one. Since I have come back to HIM I have been BLESSED so many times that I am considering writing a book about all my BLESSINGS. I pray you say this prayer honey, I would like to know that you accepted JESUS as your SAVIOUR and that you are going to HEAVEN. My heart will dance with joy. God Bless you Sweetheart, and have a BLESSED NEW YEAR !!!!
