The zip code in the US is an encoding of the postal address to street or part of a street or block, but not house/apartment number. It aids sorting of letters to the mail round. The mail man still needs to see the address to get it to the correct mail box.
A letter without a ZIP can still be delivered, but will take longer to get there.
