i no longer have the disc case which had the number on it, so cant reinstall windows without it.

Did you make a back up disc ? every one should do this
so as to avoid problems like you are having.

If you still have Windows XP installed on your computer, you can download Belarc Advisor (from the url below) and run it. It will give you a comprehensive breakdown of the hardware and software that make up your computer.

If you scroll down, past the hardware list, it will give you the key that was used to install your copy of Windows XP. Copy this and you will be able to reinstall Windows XP again.

The programme does take a few minutes to gather all the information, so don't panic if you think that it's taking it's time.

There are, of course, other programmes that will give you the same information that you're looking for, but you must still have your copy of Windows installed to get the information that you seek. With Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder you may get notification that this is a virus. This is because it's searching files that Microsoft don't want you to search.

If you're reinstalling you should be able to phone Microsoft up and they should be able to give it to you.

Usually there is a sticker on your computer with your XP product key details.
Contact Microsoft explaining you have lost your disc case for further help
