God if It exists is, arguably, like the pre-Genesis universe, "void, and without form".

You, reading this, are certainly not void (thougjh mindlessly quoting Scripture will challenge this assertion), and some of you have exquisite form (giggity).

You have a brain, you have power over yourself and power to think and make decisions based upon information. You have conceptually a heart and a mind, and depending upon which you tame you might be swayed in your beliefs more by hard facts than what your heart tells you, or vice versa.

Why is it that so many think it impossible for an individual to grow into a good, caring, moral person without God? Is it because they simply haven't tried choosing this path themselves?

have not tried that path, yeah. My thought on this is that they do not understand morality without the thought of God's big mean consequence. They have never stepped outside of the fear of God ... unfortunately.
But i do maintain, that if God is the only thing holding your morality together, keep ya nose in the bible brotha, we have enough problems :)

God represents truth, love, faith, forgiveness, reconciliation, responsibility, etc. What is wrong with that?

However, I believe it is emotionally dangerous when one thinks they can pray their lunch to the table without getting something to eat (one example).

I chose that path for 56 years. It did not work. It apparently has not worked for many others because every human has made the choice. You have made the choice. Why try to "rain on my parade". I do not stomp in your puddles.

Why do you want to be seen as a good, caring, moral person? If you are like most people, it is because such a thought makes you feel good. It gives you feelings of self-esteem. And if you did something dishonest, you would probably have bad feelings that we call conscience or maybe common sense. You help someone with a flat tire and you get feelings of self praise.

Most people simply make moral decisions on how they feel. Feelings have become rewards and punishments. We want to think that we are inherently good but in reality, we have been trained much as we could train a rat. Society has trained us from infancy to behave and they have used feelings as rewards and punishments.

The idea of us running around all day gathering good feelings like some drug addict (good feelings are just chemicals in the brain) is repulsive so we suppress that notion by telling ourselves that we are naturally, inherently good. The reality is that we are tractable, happily obeying what society has trained us to do.

Many who reject God nevertheless harbor the unfocused and contradictory idea that they were put on this earth to be good, caring, moral persons.

Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are. For this cause the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we children of God, and it is not yet made manifest what we shall be. We know that, if he shall be manifested, we shall be like him; for we shall see him even as he is. 3 And every one that hath this hope set on him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

God be with you,
William, a bond-servant of Jesus
