Apparently, you don't need an International Driving Permit, per se.

The main reason for having an International Driving permit is that is must be written in English (as well as your language if it is not English) and serves as proof that you have a valid driving licence for the category you wish to drive.

If you are residing in a country for at least three months, I believe the FIA arrangements are that you take out a licence in the country in which you are living.

Touring - not an issue, so long as you are bona fide.

When we went to Canada (from far overseas) we were told the above; but advised to also have an international driving permit (a tax/rip-off??? dunno); just in case.....

Well, welcome to Calif. I would think that you just need to take the Driving test when you arrive. First you apply for a permit, then they make you an appointment to take the written test, then the driving test.

Why on earth would you want to downgrade?

The British driving Licence is attained at a far higher standard than the American one.

There is such a thing as an international license, but here in USA, it is probably easiest to just go and take the test.

Read the book they provide and take the test that same day. It's not that hard, and it's different by state.

I believe you can. But as in most cases, I believe that you have to retake the license test to the United States' rules. Go to dmv.org and type in the state you are in. Call the number given and ask them the procedure and what you should do. Also, ask if you can drive around with the British license legally.
