If you are eligible for the Hope Credit, you can amend your 2006 return and still get the extra money.

As per the IRS you cannot use any amount paid in 2006 or 2008 to figure your 2007 education credits. So the only way out is to file an amended return for 2006. For education credits i.e. Hope Credit & Lifetime Learning Credits you have to file Form 8863.

If you are eligible to claim the credit, you may still amend a 2006 tax return up through 4/15/2010. The form is 1040X. You may be able to start the from at line 6 if this is the only thing you are changing.
(If you claimed a tuition deduction for the same student and now want to use a Hope credit, start at line 1 since you'll have to add back the tuition.)
