If you do believe that God forgives if you confess to a priest, then why?

Would he still forgive us even if we do not confess to a priest and just confess to him ourselves and ask for forgiveness?

I was brought up catholic.. I lost my faith in that practice when I realized that the bible "the all knowing and wise book of salvation" was written by ordinary men that had no actual facts of the way thing were in the time of jesus (or supposed time)
I believe in a higher power but I do not commit myself to any certain religion.. I don't believe there is one out there that is the end all be all of the actual way of life.
I also believe that if you confess your sins to a person that will listen and do so without judgement that gives you the feeling of salvation cause then you will be able to forgive yourself for your supposed sins.

You begin by thinking things over carefully. Very carefully...
There isn't a God. I feared a delusion. To list the reason for why would be unrealistic. You see things so much more clearly when not blinded by faith. Their flaws, their glorious glorious flaws.
Fear blinded common sense, I feared even questioning.

Confessing your sins to a priest to have a god forgive you. Very similar methods have been used by past crackpot organizations or what most would refer to as cults as a method of control.

Thank you. Good night.

You can confess your sins to every human being on this planet. But there is only one who can and will forgive you of your sins in God's eyes. His name is Jesus Christ.

The only way God forgives you is through is Son Jesus Christ. He is the only Way to God. John 14:6 "Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."" He is THE way, not A way to forgiveness in God. The Only Way. No priest has the power to forgive sins, only Christ has that power. He was sent for that reason, if priest were able to forgive sins then there would be no need for God to send his son.

I got existential in my youth and decided that the God concept was more likely a manifestation of humanity's evil tendency to want to control others around them without regard for their desire to be controlled or not.

If a God truly does exist, I think It may be beyond our ability to comprehend.

yeah i do believe in god, but im not a catholic, im a muslim. and im not trying to descriminate or anything but i think telling the priest your sins so he can tell god is just not right. because that means that god doesnt know everything and needs a typical human being to tell who's done what, because the real god hears and sees everything and doesnt need help from anyone.
