Do airmen get to call, get on the computer or write home during basic training? They go to basic for 6 1/2 weeks and then go to tech school correct?

they do get to call and write but as far as the computer use goes, i would highly doubt it. to many chances for looking at things that they shouldn't, playing games, and goofing off. but i'm in the army and i know they don't use the computer at all in basic. but your assumption is correct. its basic first then tech school.

Phone Calls:
One guaranteed call to let your parents or loved ones know you've arrived safely, and give them your address. It will be very short, and the TI's usually make sure of that.
Other than that one guaranteed call, it's all up to your TI. Some let their trainees call home once a week, others don't give any phone call other than that first.
If you're given Base Liberty, you can make phone calls.
(Base Liberty is about two hours of free time where you can do a lot of things on base like go eat at the minimall, buy things, make phones call, etc.)

Letters:
This all depends on your TI. My flight was never authorized to write letters. The only chance we had was when we were on Base Lib, but we all just called home instead. Some TI's give you permission to write letters during any free time that you have.

Computers:
The only way you can have computer access during BMT is while you're on Base Lib. The minimalls have computers for which you can purchase access time. Don't waste too much time there, though, when you can be spending that time hearing a loved one's voice on the phone while chowing down on that junk food you've been missing for so long.

When i got in into basic training i got to call home just to tell them that i arrived and you should get a pass during those 61/2 weeks. You will be able to write home as much as you want when you have free time at night or after lights out. But infantry basic training is alot different than airforce basic

A lot depends on the TI and how well the flight is doing as a whole regarding the phone calls. My flight got to use the phone twice...the mandatory phone call to let somebody know we arrived alive and well and then once about the 4th week. I got to write about twice a week. Once on Sunday and maybe another one over a couple of days during the week. Basic trainees do get to use computers when they have base lib but there's no guarantee that they will get it or even how much....Base lib for two hours isn't a whole lot when you are on foot. (That's really your TI messing with you.)

Once I got to basic, I got to call home a few days later just so I could give my mailing address to my parents. They yell at you to hurry up while you are on the phone.

I didn't get the opportunity to write a letter until about 3 weeks in, and I didn't get on a computer at all until I got to tech school.

I know they get to call and write but as far as computers go, I went through basic in 1985 so it was not an issue.

Ok... it's been a while since I went o basic. But they should be able to get to a phone- at least on weekends. And they are allowed to write anytime they can find the time. Usually at night before lights out- or on the weekends. They still train on the weekends but it is a lighter schedule.

When I was in Basic at Lackland back in the day, I was able to send home ONE pre-printed post card to let my mother I was there safely. I was not able to call home, write a letter at all until I was at Tech school at Sheppard AFB and then beleive me I was writing evey night and calling 1x a week. BTW, basic is going to go to 9 weeks very shortly.

The most important thing is that YOU write them often. My son really looked forward to getting mail duing basic training 4 years ago. I even mailed comics which he shared with the other guys who didn't get mail. Mail is their only diversion after a grueling day sometimes.

You get to call and write when you are given permission to call or write. It is boot camp and a lot is going on so don't count on too much communication while they are there.
