Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine which is a relative of caffeine. (Caffeine is not good for cats either, btw- hard on the kidneys) This is toxic to both dogs and cats but because cats are smaller they are more sensitive to it than dogs- though dogs are usually more likely to eat chocolate than cats.
According to the article cited below- toxic dosages range from 100-200mg/kg (1 kg = 2.2 lbs) Milk chocolate has 30-40 mg of theobromine per oz. So- if the amount he got was small then I would simply take this as a warning to be more careful. If it's in doubt, then I would seek veterinary care. (the darker the chocolate- the higher the concentration)
Symptoms of toxicity: (within 12 hours usually)
Excitement / nervousness / trembling
Vomiting / diarrhea
Excessive thirst / sometimes excessive urination (at higher levels of Theobromine toxicity)
Muscle spasms
Seizures
Coma (rare
Death (rare) -- likely due to heart rhythm abnormalities.
If he does need treatment usually what they do is induce vomiting or give charcoal.
Hopefully he'll be fine. Just keep an eye on him for a little bit. Good luck and Happy New Year!

. Chocolate contains chemicals which rarely
cause problems for humans, but for cats and other domestic pets, these chemicals can, in rare cases, be deadly.
Chocolate contains the compound theobromine which is a diuretic as well as a cardiac stimulant. This can cause the pet's heart rate to increase or it may cause the heart to beat irregularly, both of which can be dangerous to the animal. The level of theobromine present in chocolate varies depending on the type of chocolate.
Dark chocolate contains higher levels than milk chocolate and so could pose a greater risk to your pet.
There are many problems that can result from feeding a cat
chocolate. Chocolate is relatively high in calories so it can contribute tothe development of obesity in your cat. A cat can lose itsappetite for it's normal food if it eats chocolate. The largest problem is though the fact that chocolate contains the chemical theobromine as mentioned above. If this chemical builds up in the cats system, it can be potentially lethal, and one reason for this is that cats
cannot clear theobromine from their bodies as quickly as people can

Even in small amounts chocolate is poison to cats and dogs. ..Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, two different types of stimullants that affect the central nervous system and the heart muscle, as well as increasing the frequency of urination. if the animal was to eat a large quantity of chocolate he may become very sick and develop vomiting and//or diarrhea. When the amount of chocolate eaten is excessive, symptoms can include restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, increased urination and/or excessive panting. it really does depend on what kind of chocolate your cat ate, and how much.. white chocolate has the least amount of stimulants and baking chocolate or cocoa beans have the highest.
I would guess, if he only ate a little he is probably fine..
my boyfriend dropped a bag of m&ms on the floor once, he went upstairs to grab the vaccum, came down the m&ms were gone. my cat ate them -all of them. he was fine, he just had diahrhea for a few days!

Though some cats enjoy chocolate (I know mine does!), it can be harmful to them. Chocolate contains theobromine, which can cause an irregular heart beat in cats and can be fatal. Feeding cats chocolate in large amounts can also lead to obeisity and other problems. See my source for more info!
