The itching is a torture to him, I know. As he has put lotion on all the time. His skin and the enviro is too dry.

go to sleep and let the child cry...he/she is old enough to distinguish whether you're trying to help or not. just leave the lotion in the room so that he/she can decide when it's time for relief.

don't forget to tell them you love them and offer help if they need it, but they have to ask.

make yourself clear and go straight to the point.

sounds like ur child has ezema ... best solution for that is Aveenno lotion the one that says for ezema should be light blue cap on it. U can buy it at wal mart not really exspensive. You cant make a 9 year old stop crying she needs to see a dr if the Aveeno lotion doesnt work.

Try a different lotion. Have you taken him to the doctor for this? My kids have very sensitive skin and I only use Aveeno on them it is a bit expensive but worth it. It does not burn at all, just do not get the Menthol one I love it but they say it burns.

And I agree with the one answer about sending him to his room until he can calm down. 9 is plenty old enough to understand. My youngest is just 7 and acts the same way and I tell her until she can calm down she has to go to her bed because I cannot help her if she is yelling and wont let me help her. Sometimes she stops right away and other times it takes 5 or 10 minutes for her to calm down then she comes out and we do it. I have also told her let me help you or we are going to the doctor for it. You cannot let them control the situation especially if it is a medical need.

Maybe the lotion burns? If it was my child i would simply tell him or her, this is your options, explain why you dont want my help, and tell me what i can do to make it better. If not you arent getting any help because you are acting like a baby.

Something my mother did for me when i was itchy as a young child was put oven mitts on me. so i couldnt itch, i could just rub the area for relief.

Explain to him why he needs the lotion. Listen to his concerns. Ask him to be involved in the solution. Understanding why he needs the lotion & that the lotion is not negotiable (if it isn't - and if it isn't make sure he understands why), ask him which way he would prefer to have lotion applied. Would he rather do it himself? Would he like you to do it a little at a time? Would he like to be doing something distracting while you do it (TV? video games? napping?)

The child is nine years old. Explain what the lotion will do and allow them time to decide to use it. Either the itch or the child's stubborn streak will win. Either way, the time the child spends itching will be more educational than any punishment you could think up and will be more incentive to them than anything else as well.

Even though you feel bad for the child, you cannot tolerate a tantrum. Send the child to his or her room, and tell them that as soon as they want to calm themselves down and let you help them, then they can come out and ask nicely. Nine is too old for this sort of behavior.
