Both my daughter and the boy that brought the knife to school are 9 years old. The boy was threatening to kill other children! It clearly states in the student handbook that there is a "no tolerance" law, and any student that brings a weapon to school will be automatically expelled. The boy got ONLY 2 days of in-school suspension!! I am very angry about this, because it basically says tells the children nothing will happen if you bring a weapon to school! I plan to go to the office as soon as school is back in to speak to the principal about this. Does anyone have any suggestions, other than going to the school?!

I would be outraged and throw a huge fit at the office if that didnt work i'd want to meet with the school officials and maybe even the cops of that school we have cops here i dont know if you have them at yalls school or not. Id defiently tell them everything you've said here you have reasons to be concerned and im sure other parents dont know about this. Goodluck

if you get nowhere with the principal then go to the school district head quarters. If that doesn't work then take it to the state board of education. 2 days inhouse detention isn't enough.

Yes, that is WAY too little. There is a LAW that says a child who brings a weapon is expelled from school for 180 days (one full school year).

Missbean is right. The other answers are hateful and unforgiving. The boy is 9 years old for goodness sake. If you don`t give a child that age a second chance and that is obviously what you don`t want, then never ask again why your society is so violent. Your hate is creating a lot of violence. Do you remember Columbine? By sending this small boy out in the cold, do you think that will make him a better person?
If you want to do something constructive you should invite this boy to come to your home - sit down with him AND your daughter and tell him how sad you and your daughter feel about this. Let him understand that your daughter is afraid because of him. Tell him that you think he is a good boy and
know that he will never do such a thing again. Then eat some sweet together and hug him goodbye.

They probably lightened the punishment on this boy because he is obviously troubled...there is no reason to bring more hardship on an already sick child. Have a little compassion. The situation, while very scary was a cry for help...now he can get it, and won't grow up to act on these violent impulses. If your daughter is afraid to go to school, get her some therapy to work this out, talk to the school counselor to help her feel safe again. Don't use your child's sensitivity as a reason to persecute a child who already has enough problems.
I may seem a little touchy-feely here, but I find "Zero Tolerance" to be ridiculous when dealing with young children. Every day on the news, I hear about a perfectly innocent kid being expelled because of this: a 10 year old honor student was arrested for having a steak knife...and was cutting steak with it. A 12 year old Boy Scout was expelled for TURNING IN his Boy Scout knife when he realized it was in his pocket...stuff like this all the time. While I realize that your situation is different, I still don't believe that kicking a little kid out of school would really be the right thing to do. We're talking about children here, we all need to have a little understanding and compassion.

hopefully the parents of this boy are getting him help; but no doubt his parents are low lifes and the boy has anger issues, so does violent, threatening things.
it's a shame we don't know for sure what type of home situation many children come from, and a bigger shame that parents leave their children with emotional problems and anger issues.

Get some other parents to go with you and raise heck. This is the kind of thing that ends up like Columbine if not stopped.

Rally the parents at the school and show up at the next school board meeting. Raise holy hell until then boot this kid. Why wasn't he arrested?
