Moderation refers to that which is neither too little or too much as, for example, we advocate in eating. In balance, it is more of equality,it may be too much, if it is light ,to balance the heavy which may be too little in occupying the space, say in a weighing balance.Extreme refers to excess of anything. The first two has generally positive connotation whereas the last one-Extreme-has a negative connotation, yet the extreme also can have positive meaning, as for instance, doing genuine good to people, excess is all the more good!We may also say that it all refers to a sense of fairness,a sense of proportion and a sense of abundance in life.

I assume that being moderate and balanced is the same. Both the type of reaction is shown by all the human beings during the entire course of life. It depends on how much the person is affected by any particular incident. It all depends on his understanding of the very purpose of this life. It all depends on the education level of that person. Education means just not the usual school, college and university.Today we have a situation where a medical Surgeon Doctor who has spent millions of dollars on his education stealing innocent pateint's kidneys for just $4000/-. What is the use of the education he has acquired for more than 20 years of his life. This is an extreme situation where a so called learned person has acted for money in greed. In the same situation if he has discussed and informed the innocent man, gave him his share, then taken his kidney then that is a balanced act. Again the same action may be a balanced one for few persons and an extreme action for another. Suppose if some one's mother, sisters and wife raped before his eyes in his childhood, his whole family driven out of their own home, then later this person in his adult age joined a so called extreme organisation and his actions become the terrorists acts. As far as he is concerned his action is justified for him. But for the innocent victims who die, this becomes an extreme incident. So definig the actions as balanced or extreme is entirely depending on the person and his history. In today's news media the real history is getting hidden. Truth gets twisted and false things are made to appear as correct news. As I quoted the medical surgeon's news in the beginning, today most of the leaders and their followers have failed to understand the true purpose of life. Most of their actions are done with selfish motives. IN this process many extreme actions are justified as moderate and many moderate actions are twisted as extreme actions.

Do everything in moderation. Like Drinking. If you do too much, you can become intoxicated. If you do it to the extreme, you can become and Alcoholic or a drug addict.
Some people over eat and become fat. Some eat so much they go to the extreme and become diabetic.
Doing everything in moderation will better your chances of staying balanced. Not to much and not too little. In all things be discerning. You would not put your hand on a hot stove to try it when you know better. That is not balance, that is stupidity.

Using an example
Drinking in moderation...what I did today...I drank about 1 oz of sweet red wine two hours before driving. Just enough to taste, but not enough to worry about whether it was safe to drive.
Drinking in balance would be to go to a bar with a group of friends and everyone buys a round of beers. Being in balance may or may not be the right thing to do in this case, especially if you get behind the wheel.
Drinking in extreme would be to go to a party and get wasted.

To me, something moderate is the opposite of something extreme. An extremist of a belief might not tolerate ANY opinions other than his own, and even try to harm those who do not share his beliefs. A moderate would be more likely to be tolerant of others' beliefs, even if he does not share them.
To me, balance in terms of religion implies a HEALTHY mixture of spiritual and secular aspects to one's life; a person who goes to either extreme in the way he lives is, in my opinion, missing the point.
