Ground him. Take away tv, toys, and video games. Make him study while he is grounded. Also make him apologize to the teacher. Be sure to help him study if it is something he has trouble with. Also talk to him. Tell him he should have come for help while studying before the test, because then he would not have needed to cheat. Tell him why it is not okay to cheat. Try talking to his teacher to see if he can retake the test.

I'm not sure punishment will really teach him that this was wrong.
Yes, of course you need to punish him, but a standard punishment, such as grounding, will not teach him anything about why it is wrong to cheat. I think you should sit him down and ask him why he cheated and then have him write an apology to the teacher, adressing why it was wrong of him to cheat and what he will do in the future (study for tests) so that he doesn't need to cheat. Then, I would go in WITH him to give the teacher the letter. If you make a huge deal out of it this time, it probably won't happen again.

Is not about punishment however is about the question WHY!
I am a teacher myself, and young kids does cheat at times (so does adults) Some do it because they didnt study some is out of excitment. But overall, they are afraid that their parents would punish them, compare them with other kids or scold them stupid. Think over it, how do you feel if you failed your test and knowing your parents are going to punish u? You may like to tell him the consequences of cheating and give him another chance to repent. Make him promise you that he would promised to study hard for the next wrong before forgiving him and do praise him if he show improvment. Trust me, praising make one feel good.

Make him study that damn test until he knows it by heart, and let him know that he'll be doing the same from now on. Punishment is not always the best option, understanding is however a more peacful way to go, I'm sure youve cheated on something atleast one time in your life.

he isn't studying enough to take the tests on his own merit. Now he must study at the dining room table and have his work checked nightly for a week. Plus a retake of the test, regardless of the grade (he should have already gotten a zero for cheating) and an apology to the teacher.

Everyday when he gets home make him study each subject for 30 mins. not just for a week though. They did a study recently on this and 40% of kids admitted they think cheating is ok to get ahead. Teach him that this isn't ok.

We often use denial of video game privileges, but your child may be too young for that. Hopefully the kid is already embarrassed to be caught and realizes they should avoid cheating in the future - getting caught young can be beneficial that way. Choose something the child will notice, but if the child seems sincerely sorry already then don't go overboard.

Make him apologize to the teacher for not doing his own work. It's almost like saying he didn't respect the teacher by cheating. The embarrassment should be enough punishment.

Take awa some privilege for a couple of days. The important thing here is that your son not only understand that cheating is wrong but also why it's wrong. You should have that discussion with him.
