Yes unfortunately if the company is applying for a work permit they do get the employee to pay the costs and reimburse. They do however need more details from your to do the work permit but once this is organised the wk permit can be arranged in 72 hours.
Good luck and happy new year.

This is a well known (Nigerian) Advance Fee SCAM.

The scam is that they want you to wire them 950GBP and then they will disappear.

How did you learn about them, "Global Recruitors" or an email on a jobsite?

I bet they offered you a tremendous job at 100K GBP, free tickets, free housing etc. but now they can't get the visa through unless you pay them in advance....

This has all the earmarks of a scam. If you didn't apply for the job, and didn't have a formal interview, then it's almost certainly a scam. It's a common one these days - you get an offer by email usually of a very high-paid job, and they say they got your resume or c.v. from someplace and are very impressed so don't need to actually interview you - then the demands for money start. There isn't really a job, they're just trying to scam you.
