Jesus probably entrusted Mary to John because Joseph had died and there was no one else to care for her. We do not know for sure that Joseph was dead, but it fits logically.

As to the matter of whether or not Jesus had brothers, the question is a little more complicated than people here make it out to be. In French, there is the word 'parents.' It may mean your actual parents, relatives in general, or even close friends. When the Bible states that Jesus' brothers were at the gate, it uses a word much like the French 'parents;' that is, it could be translated either as actual brothers or as various male relatives. Furthermore, the Bible never states whether or not Mary remained a virgin all her life, but early Christian tradition holds that she did. Finally, if Jesus did have brothers, why would he have had to entrust his mother to John? Traditionally, it would have been the job of the next oldest. So I guess no one knows for sure, but Catholicism concludes that he did not. Obviously, there is still debate on the issue.

It was probable that Joseph had already died. He was not mentioned in any of the stories when Jesus is grown. Yes, Jesus did have brothers, but Jesus was entrusting his mother with someone he cared a lot for.

The question is, how do we know it was John? The Gospel is named after John, but the author never identifies him/her self. The only reason it is assumed that it is John is because John is considered by tradition to be the disciple that Jesus loved most. Was that trully the case? Some believe that Lazarus was the disciple that Jesus loved most - after all he brought him back from the dead. I'm not saying I know who it is, but just saying that no one is sure who wrote the Gospel

It is correct way of the spiritual family and John was the disciple whom scripture says Jesus loved...John was the only disciple at the cross and looked on..Mary was Jesus mother and Jesus knowing John's heart and mind made clear that spiritual adoption and servitude commanded of John was official...Now that He was to die...Jesus would have something to do with His mother (remember He had nothing to do with her before...yet she followed). He did everything for us...He showed Mary that John would be of the same Spirit...that He would be with us still...."a cloud of witnesses" ...Jesus went out from His Father's house so it does not mention Joseph. Yes He had brothers...but He had to go out into the world and call people...and the conversion is even more real than if it were His natural brother.

Jesus entrusted Mary to John and John to Mary so they could take care of each other after Jesus had passed. Maybe Joseph had died before this had happened. The Bible doesn't say anything abou that. Jesus had many brothers but the Bible doesn't state what happened to them by the time Jesus was crucified.

His brothers were ` James, Joseph, Simon, Jude, (Amos) who dies at age 5 from fever.
sisters, Miriam, Martha, Ruth.
His father died when Jesus was young. Jesus was the oldest and had to be the father figure then.
John was called John the beloved. Probably this may be an indication that John was his favorite disciple.
Maybe the other children were hiding so they would not be killed.

Jesus Christ was the only child of Mary and Joseph.

Joseph was married, had children, and was widowed before he became engaged to Mary.

Joseph was 35 to 45 years old and Mary was 14 to 16 years old at the time of their engagement.

It is generally assumed that Joseph had died before Jesus started his ministry 30 years later.

The brothers and sisters of Jesus, as they are described in the Bible, had no blood relationship to Mary and had no legal responsibility to her under Jewish Law.

Therefore Jesus had to find someone else (John) to take care of her after his death.

With love in Christ.

Even enduring the pain of the cross, Jesus loved those who believed in Him. Mary, his mother was to lose a son in a way, but he gave John to be her son in his place. He loved both of them.

No one knows what happened to Joseph. So everything about what happened to Joseph is speculation.

Edit: The scriptures say that Jesus had brothers, not that the Roman Catholics have to believe anything that the Bible says, but traditions that make void the word of God.

John 7
1 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee, purposely staying away from Judea because the Jews there were waiting to take his life. 2 But when the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near, 3 Jesus' brothers said to him, "You ought to leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the miracles you do. 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world." 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.

6 Therefore Jesus told them, "The right time for me has not yet come; for you any time is right. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that what it does is evil. 8 You go to the Feast. I am not yet going up to this Feast, because for me the right time has not yet come." 9 Having said this, he stayed in Galilee.

10 However, after his brothers had left for the Feast, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.
Yes, by Joseph he apparently had half-brothers. James was one of them. He apparently also had sisters.

Jesus had brothers. They were his half-brothers.

Joseph died sometime previously, and there were no brothers and sisters, because Mary was born a virgin, and she remained a virgin for her entire life.

Only those who mistakenly think the bible is the sole and complete record of all God's revelation make these types of fundamental mistakes.

That's why they're called fundamentalists ... and not Catholics.

Catholics know the whole truth, because Catholics were there at the foot of the cross, they were there with Mary and with St. John, Catholics were there at Pentecost, and Catholics later wrote and certified the entire new testament of the bible.

The bible was never intended to be used as fundamentalist Protestants use it.

The only reason Protestants actually FOLLOW the bible is because they first showed up a thousand years after the Catholic Church compiled, wrote, and infallibly certified ALL of the sacred scriptures.

The Catholic Church existed for some 400 years BEFORE the bible was ever produced, so anyone who thinks the authentic Church ought to FOLLOW the bible is seriously mixed up.

The bible is authentic Catholic sacred Tradition, reduced to writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and nothing more.

Thank God for that!
