Apparently, Windows Movie Maker doesn't have some of the features that I need.

What are the features you need? I can make recommendations, but give me the features. You might not be able to download too much for free, but there are plenty of fully-functional trial versions out there that you can use for your project, and have the option to purchase later if you want. Ulead VideoStudio is one that I've used, for example. It has more features than WMM, probably most of what you need.

since your priority is dowloadable, i assume you are not into expending for some premium quality products which are already suggested, but nevertheless, assuming you are on windows, VirtualDub is a good option, which is downloadable and usable.

Note that it does not create shortcuts so unzip the package in some well-frequented location.

p.s. you didn't mention if you wanted linear or non-linear video editing

I agree with NYC fan - without knowing what you need it's difficult to make recommendations. That said, I'm a big fan of Sony's Vegas Movie Studio. I'd avoid Pinnacle Studio though - it's very unstable.

Mac has a lot of cool movie editing things but you could just ask someone at bestbuy or something for a good one for windows.
