This behavior started when my 3 year old cat returned home after spending the night at the Vet Hospital. She was ill and needed to be hospitalized for 24 hours.

It may have an unfamiliar smell on it and the older cat may be affected by it. I had th same problem. Take some of your clothing you have worn and rub it all over the young one. it sounds stupid but it should work

Cats rely heavily on their sense of smell, and your 3 year old has returned home smelling different. Your older cat doesn't recognise any of these scents and feels threatened by them.

You can try separating them for a couple of days, to give your 3 year old chance to acquire the "communal" scent of your home again. Alternatively, take a soft cloth and wipe it over the cheeks and chin of your older cat, then wipe this over the younger one to help inter-mingle their scents or swap their bedding etc.

Once the smell of the vet wears off, things should be back to normal. Do not punish the older cat, as this may make it more resentful of the younger one.

The 14-year-old is most likely freaking out because of all the unfamiliar scents being introduced into his/her atmosphere. Older cats can be as conservative and resistant to change as older humans, if not more so. I would limit their contact or even separate them for a few days and see if that solves the problem. It might also not be a bad idea to occasionally spritz the 3-year-old with a highly diluted form of body or linen spray that the older cat might be familiar with, provided of course you know it is not harmful to the cat's skin.

your 14 year old cat can smell the unfamiliar smells of the vet clinic on the 3 year old cat.

it will probably fade in time... this doesn't necessarily mean the 14 year old cat will change it' attitude.

Because your 3yr old smells diffently! The only thing you can do is give them space and in a few days the3yr old will have its own scent back and they will be fine once again.

The younger cat probably smells like the vet.

Give them a few days. The scent will wear off.
