My best shot story doesn't involve hunting. A local outdoor range here has 200 yard steel plates, it got to the point where hitting the steel plates at 200 yards with a 22 rifle was just too easy, so me and a friend of mine shoot leaves off the dirt bank behind the steel plates with out 22's. Try shooting a leaf with a 22 rifle from 200 yards away, it aint easy.

when i was 19, I shot a mule deer 570 yards away with my savage 110 E 30-06 in central texas (hill country). I aimed a little high and to the left for wind and the bullet dropped right behind his shoulder. He fell right on his face instantly. I was using 180grn Federal Premium Vital Shock with the Barnes Triple shock x bullet.

When I was a much younger man I owned a Hi Standard, Double Nine, Buntline revolver. It was a .22 cal. with a 9 1/2 inch barrel. It was such an ungainly gun I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with it, but it was a fun gun.

One day my two buddies and I went prairie dog hunting at a local ranch with our varmint rifles. After a couple hours of shooting we had made a pretty serious dent in the local population. Suddenly, one dog popped out of his hole about 75 yards in front of us. One of my buddies told me to take a shot with my Buntline. Both knew how bad a shot I was with it but I picked up the gun from the shooting table and, holding it at the hip, shot in the general direction of the dog. He fell over dead. . ., there was a stunned silence. I recovered first; calmly put the gun back down and told my buddies, "I've been practicing some." Of course, there was an immediate challenge to repeat the feat. But I demurred, saying I did not want to make them look any more foolish.

Some times, just absolute dumb luck rules. . .

When I was 15 I shot a sparrow in one eye and out the other with a Russian made .177 breech brake single shot pellet rifle from about 15 yards. That was the most accurate pellet rifle I ever fired.
Not as cool as your story but still true.

sorry but if you didn't mean to shot it in the eye then it was not a good shot. yes you made the kill but where where you really aimed, if you were aimed at the kilzone (lungs, heart...) then you made a terrible shot

my best was a 130 class 8pt whitetail about 200 yards on the run, hit him in the heart with a 25-06 remington rifle. shot him like a skeet target, pulled throught to an estimated lead which was perfect

another good one was 3 long beards (eastern turkey) with one shot with my remington super mag using 3 1/2" remington heavy shot

for duck we were hunting a creek one day when a drake mallord flew over and normally no one would have taken the shot as he was way up there, but with a slow day i took the shot, going off some long targets at clays i estimated a lead and nailed him, ok i know this was actaully more luck than anything but i did pick a good enough lead to get him

Growing up we used to shoot groundhogs on the farm. I remember taking about a 100 yard shot with my Ruger 10/22 at one that was standing up on the mound by the hole. I thought it was a clean miss and was about to shoot again when it just keeled over like a stone. When I checked - right between the eyes. Just took a minute for it to figure out it was already dead.
