There are many causes of neuopathic disorders affecting the extremities, the feet are often the first area affected, as they are the area of the body farthest from the brain and central nervous system when a person is affected with a peripheral neuropathic disorder. The sensations you report are consistent with a person with peripheral neuropathy, but diagnostic testing needs to be done to determine the possible causes. Some are simple nutritional issues or related to diabetes, others can be inflammatory or possibly an auto-immune response. There are also some infectious conditions which can cause these symptoms. You should see your primary care provider for initial testing and possible treatment or referral to a neurologist.

Until you are seen, be sure to use care when trimming your toenails, and do not go barefoot, as minor injuries to the foot may not be noticed until they become significant problems.
