How many beers would you guess will get a first time drinker drunk? Buzzed? What about the effect of one beer? They are 5'9 and probably 165 lbs.

Contrary to what others are implying, Guinness is actually a pretty weak beer, it's 4.2% ABV the same as Bud Light.

If you stick to "standard" 5% ABV macro lagers (Budweiser, Coors, Miller) then you'll probably be feeling the beers in 1-3 depending on how much you have eaten that day. Certainly in the realm of drunk from 4 on I would believe. If you drink their light offerings I'd probably tack on 1-2 beers for your overall tally.

If you plan on drinking "standard" ~6% craft beer then it is entirely within possibility that you could be feeling drunk at 3, pretty well buzzed at 2 even. If you are going for something a little more special though and end up with a beer of 10+% ABV then I would tread carefully, some of those beers can get you tanked rather quickly.

Overall I'd say that 4 or 5 beers of average strength would be a safe yet enjoyable number.

The amount of beers matters, but you also need to account for the type of beer that you are drinking. If you are drinking Coors or Budweiser you can probably drink more than if you were drinking Obsidian Stout or Guiness, to get drunk. There tends to be more alcohol percentage in micro brews. Drinking two domestic beers may or may not give you a buzz, however if you have never drank before two micros would probably give you a buzz. Four micros would probably have you well on your way.

1 Beer and you're alright. Buzzed after 2, tipsy after 3, drunk after 4, wasted after 5. Mostly it's in your head.

If you're in a situation and you want to act drunk, 2 beers and you'll be gone. But to actually get drunk like with the warped perception, it'll take more that 2.

2-3 for buzzed, probably 4-5 for drunk. It depends on how much food you eat too, so make sure you eat before you drink. Greasy food is best. And drink water while you drink, and also try to eat while you drink. If you get the spins, stop drinking alcohol. You have gone too far.

I'll agree with most of the other answers but it also depends on the beer. I tried Guiness as my first and one gave me a pretty good buzz.
