1987-1990 Cherokees used a different computer than the 1991+ years. That system takes longer than others by design. It takes a couple of revolutions of the engine before the computer knows top dead center of #1 piston and puts out spark and fuel to the engine. If you cherokee is in this span of years it may help explain it. If it's the check valve in the fuel system BMW makes an inline check valve that can be ordered from a BMW dealer. They had the same problem and found it cheaper to put in the inline valve rather than drop the tank.

Sounds like your anti-drain back valve is leaking. It's on top of the gas tank and keeps pressure in the line, when it leaks the gas drains back to the tank which results in your Jeep taking longer to start.

It's kind of a pain to swap, you'll need to drop the gas tank, but it's no big deal if you leave it as is.

Check out the link below and search for anti drainback, you'll get plenty of answers...

Hope that helps and don't forget to Tread Lightly...

The 1989 year Jeep Cherokee had a recall on the crank shaft position sensor.

im having a blond moment ( no offense, just a figure of speech )
the part of the fuel system that holds the pressure in the fuel line could be no good. causing the fuel pressure to always drop when the fuel pump shuts off. A engine needs quite a bit of fuel to crank over.
