The commonly seen movement of lying flat on one's back and springing to your feet...does anyone know the name of this, if it does have a name?

It's called a kip-up...you bring your knees towards your head, and when you throw them forward, you push off with your shoulders (or hands if you can get them back there). This motion is called "kipping", where you use your body to create energry to complete a motion. You will also commonly see some people use this motion while doing pull ups; they will swing their legs backwards, and as they pull up, they will swing their legs back and creat momentum to complete the pullup.

It does require a certain amount of coordination, because if your timing is off, you WILL pull something...

that crap is just for the movies. or dancing. if you ever tried that in a fight don't be surprised if as you spring to your feet you catch a foot in your teeth or a stiff jab to your eye socket for the win. try practicing that up kicking while your down. Now you can do some serious damage to someone if youre good at it because they won't expect you to be accurate. then once you land one of those and knock that fool out you can sing that song from the karate kid. the one that goes "youre the best! around! no one's ever gonna keep you down". then try to get a modeling contract because you look so good doing it. well, i speak for myself. I don't know about you, but, i'm the BEST!

Is he asking you guys if it works for fighting? No.

Anyways, it's called a kip-up, and it isn't actually impractical for getting up as long as you don't do it in a showboat way.
