Evolution is a phenomenon that we have observed in our world. The Theory of Evolution is the explanation we have developed to explain the phenomenon.
People sometimes just say evolution when they are speaking of the theory. Either way, it happens, and we have attempted to explain it.

Well evolution is just a word that describes the process by which something passes by degrees, maturing in each degree. When you refer to the theory of evolution you are applying this definition to the origins of man. That is an important distinction between the two. The theory of evolution involves the evolution of species.

I know exactly what the difference is. And even in the scientific meaning of the word theory, theories can and have been wrong. Apparently evolution supporters are not aware what a scientific theory is because I keep seeing them referring to evolution as a scientific theory when it meets none of the criteria a scientific theory needs to meet to be considered one. A scientific theory must be observable and testable with repeatable, predictable results. Evolution meets none of these criteria.

Yes and no. They both refer to the scientific theory of descent with modification. However, "evolution" is used more commonly with certain animals. For example, the 'evolution of the whale.' On the contrary, the "theory of evolution" refers to the broad theory which applies to all life.

No. Scientific theory is well supported hypothesis/fact. Evolution is a cold, hard FACT. The "theory" of evolution that you might be talking about is how humans came into existence correct? That is a well supported hypothesis.

Sounds like you are gearing up the misuse the word theory Shawn.
Look up the differences between scientific theory and philosophical theory before getting too excited about your upcoming point.
A scientific theory is not the same as a philosophical theory or a religious theory. You need to understand this before claiming that Evolution is only a 'theory'.
I don't blame you for making this mistake, you have been lied to by people who know better and are meant to be moral and above that type of behavior. Its not your fault they took advantage of your lack of scientific understanding to lie to you about theories.
Scientific theories are established truths based on all available evidence, religious theories and philosophical theories are guesses that cannot be verified with data. Two completely different things.
People kill one another over religious theories, precisely because they cannot be measured or proven, so it lies sole in belief and faith. In the end the only way to convince a non believer is with your fist or gun, because there is no empirical evidence to prove your belief.
People do not kill one another over scientific theories, because they are based on observable, measurable, empirical data. And humans can disagree about the theories, but in the end admit that the data presented looks pretty uniform. Every now and then evidence presents itself with requires a change in scientific theory, luckily reasonable people look at this evidence and use it to change belief. This doesn't happen in religion because the 'evidence' used is not at all empirical.

Yes. The theory of evolution is the idea that favorable traits that are heritable become more common in successive generations of a population of reproducing organisms, and unfavorable traits that are heritable become less common. Evolution is the process in which those favorable traits become more prevalent within a species.

In everyday use, not really.
I think technically evolution is what the theory of evolution tries to explain.

Yes!
Evolution is a change in allele frequencies over time in a given population. It's observable and fact.
The scientific theory explains how this happens (natural selection, genetic drift, sexual selection, mutations, etc).
But this is a science question, dont you think?
