Thought I was reading package directions carefully, but I guess not. Box said to;

blend ingredients at low speed for 30 seconds
beat at medium speed for 4 minutes

I hand mixed it for 30 seconds, then got out electric mixer, put it around medium, and let it go, but around 3 minutes it was really getting thick, so I stopped then. It was thick like divinity before it sets up. I've never spooned cake mix into pan, always poured it before.

Guess I'm not sure what 'beat' means here.

I put them in oven anyway (made two cakes), are they going to turn out tough? Or what? What should I have done?

Well now, wait a minute. Just was re-reading box, and it does say "BEAT at medium speed for 4 minutes" so maybe I did it right, but it was so very thick, like I said I couldn't pour it into pan, had to spoon it in in big clumps.

Some cake mixes just turn out thicker. When I make a butter yellow cake mix, I have to spoon it into the pan, while other mixes just pour right in. Your cake will be fine. I've never seen a cake mix say to beat it 4 minutes, the ones I use usually say 2. I beat mine for longer than the box says anyway, it makes the cakes fluffier. Don't fret, everything will be fine.

That sounds fine to me. Medium on a mixer is usually the beat setting. Sometimes it helps if you stop after 2 or 3 min and use a rubber spatula and scrape the bowl to look for any lumps and then beat 1 more min or so. Also keep in mind some things are meant to have a few lumps in them, like when you make blue berry muffins, there are sometimes some powder lumps left.
Another thing about cake batter, I think it would be more likely ruined if it was over beaten. I've seen that on the directions before not to overbeat. I think it affects the cake's ability to rise maybe.
I'm sure by this time you've already taken your cakes out and they turned out fine!
On a creative note....I got a new food processor for Christmas. You'd think after 20yrs of marriage and I consider myself a good cook, I would know all about using one of them, but I really am learning what all I can do with it. Well, tonight I used it to make the batter for banana bread instead of getting out my big Oster machine! Worked GREAT! Don't be afraid to try new things! Enjoy your cakes!

I think your cakes will be fine, but probably not as high and light as if you'd beaten for the entire 4 minutes like directions said.

maybe you left out a liquid ingredient
