Real beer has only 4 ingredients.
Malted barley, hops, yeast and water.
BUT, depending on the beer, anything can be added. This includes sugar for higher alcohol content, rice for lighter body, and various herbs and spices for flavor. You can also use other grains than barley. Wheat, for example, is a popular addition.

yeast
The yeast ferments the barley and the hops provide aroma, flavor, and act as a natural preservative. In Germany, only the above 4 ingredients are allowed. Some beers from other countries have additional ingredients, such as wheat, or in the case of "light" beer, rice. There's a lot more to it than that, but those are the basics.

Lesson number one: If you're going to drink a strong beer, make it a good one. Don't waste your time with anything from Milwaukee. The answer that talked about the Dogfish Head was good. I'd suggest a road trip to Cooperstown to the Brewery Ommegang. I live in the San Francisco area where we're blessed with a great number of good strong beers. I'm a hophead, so I like Russian Rivers' Pliny the Elder, most any hopped beer from Green Flash Brewery, Lagunitas's Maximus beer, Drake's IPA and a great many more.
