Because they did in the First Gulf War

We allowed Saddam to retain his army and the elite Republican Guard after the first Gulf war. This time when we invaded we disbanded Saddam's Sunni Army. This was actually advised against by the first appointed US leader in Iraq, Lt. Gen. Jay M. Garner. He warned that all that would do is drive these trained militants underground. That is exactly what happened and why we had trouble getting in control of the lawlessness. We finally, 4 years later realized we should have used the military rather than disbanded them, so we have now re-armed the Sunni's to fight the Shiite who are really aligned with Iran and Al-Qaeda and our military is now retraining them.

Iraq has a totally new military these days. Despite horrid casualties, volunteer numbers are high.

They have an Army focused mostly on counter insurgency - they have quite a few mostly-donated tanks, but no artillery (boo!).

They have a small Navy - all boats, one battalion of infantry.

They have a small Air Force, too - no strike capability, just transport and reconnaissance.

They're also supplemented by the police, which have their own light mechanized battalions. All in all, the military of Iraq is pretty much just a shade of what it used to be.

Yes... The rebuilding of Iraq is more than just bricks and mortar, much of Australia's contribution has been in a training role as has the US and other countries... Upon Australia's withdrawal next year Britian will be taking over their role in training...

The only real military Iraq has is OURS! Paid of in Trillions of dollars by you and I, while our own country is deeply in debt brought about by the conservatives. We are TRILLIONS in debt in the red. Did you know that when Democratic Bill Clinton was in office, we the United States, were in the green and completely debt free? Our country was filled with HIGH paying jobs, not millions of low wage jobs, and stocks were at an all time high! We must leave Iraq, change the present conservative administration, and remove our military from there, so that America may once again spend our own tax money where it belongs...right here. VOTE in the next presidential election. And be FREE again.

Yes they have a better army now because they are being trained by the BEST US.

What happens when we leave if they fall it is their fault.
