Yes, we've been changing BT/OSUT/AIT for some time. The philosophy is that we are to treat the new Soldiers more like 'college students', since that's what they are in training. Most AIT's are removing the drill sergeants, and just telling the AIT trainee's to show up tommorrow at 0800 after your personal PT, with a 'Platoon Sergeant" (not DS) to help with medical appointments, pay paperwork, 'issues', etc.
They still get military discipline instilled, but we also want them to actually think about their actions, rather than performing everything as an automatic drill. Thinking, analyzing, comprehending-all take time to develop. Negative stress can distract from the experiential learning at an early phase. Does the unit want a Soldier who can think and act, or just act? [I know-you just want a PFC who'll do what they are told; but that PFC will be a E-4 team leader, and E-5 squad leader within two years] We are trying to make every Soldier a leader.
Training is still mediocre tough-we aren't babying them, and there's still a time and place for 'corrective training'. But, If that mean cell phones to call home at night, or periodic cigerette breaks, big deal.

Just because you had it off worse, it doesn't mean everyone should have it as bad as you.

If you joined the Army within the past twenty years, chances are you've had things much easier than someone who joined during the 1960s anyway. Everyone has "had it easier".

Feeling sleepy never made me feel more disciplined - it just makes it harder to learn what the instructors are teaching you. All you can eat in five minutes! Phone time - if it puts your mind at ease so you can train better, why not?

But yelling... unless a recruit has a knack for avoiding any errors or mess ups, yelling should stay. Yelling made me a very disciplined panda.

I cant even start. I was the oldest guy in basic and the Drills gave me no breaks. God help me if I came in last on a run or didnt beat people on pushups. I got yelled at by people younger than me on a daily basis and now I see this crap. We should be careful the type of soldiers we produce these days. At least take the phones away, whats wrong with getting mail?

What? Some of what was said is just not even true!
My husband went to benning earlier this year...I got to see some pics and video of the things that went on in there, along with hearing some pretty ....mildly disturbing things that happen there (thats just me). They still yell....they still don't let people use cell phones or computers...they still do the shark attack and smoke people all day long for ONE person's mistakes. And they still let the recruits beat up people in the middle of the night for messing them all up. That isn't really soft is it?? I hope not. Soft basic training is NOT sufficient.

The boots your describe make sense for certain temperatures, and weather conditions. I have a pair of hiking boots which I wear when I have to walk any distance in cold weather, when there is packed snow, or icy sidewalks. They keep me warm. They are comfortable, and they grip the sidewalk or path. I also have lighter weight, fashionable boots which I wear to work, when I drive, and simply have to walk a few steps to and from my car. I would argue that you should choose according to the conditions and worry a little less about the fashion. If the army boots were all I had, I would wear them and be grateful for their warmth and durability!

It does kind of piss me off. I didn't get a cell phone in basic. I got one five minute phone call the entire time I was their. We got exactly got five minutes to eat and believe me, it wasn't buffet style. We were lucky if we got six hours of sleep. We also got yelled at every waking moment of the day. We did more pushups than I can count and we didn't get a whole lot of personal time either.

All you can eat at the mess hall? Cell phones? No yelling?

Sheesh. I think they need to leave well enough alone or go back to wall to wall counseling.

I heard the new recruits don't even have to do KP anymore.

I'd almost rather do that than be in my current unit. The basic training I went through was by no means hard, but it was nothing like that.

You're right. It does piss me off. I guess next they will be taking away the bullets and arming our soldiers with fruit baskets so they might give them to the Taliban as peace offerings.

As long as the army can preform at a good level, I c no problem with this. Some of the methods at the camp seem to be unnecisary.
