There is a George Washington, Abraham Lincoln. I would think there would be a Thomas Jefferson before a George H.W. Bush or the new one about to be built Gerald R. Ford.

Because there was two other ships already named for him. The first was a transport attack ship the (APA 30) and the second was a nuclear submarine (SSBN 618) You can't have multiple ships or subs with overlapping names at the same time. Who knows what the future may bring with the CVX (Ford Class) of carriers.

Both USS THOMAS JEFFERSON'S were awesome ships in their own right.

There has been 2 ships named the USS Thomas Jefferson. The first was a WWII transport. The 2nd a submarine.

Thomas Jefferson was not in support of a large Navy. Perhaps this is why a large attack craft has not been named after him.

Wayne C. is probably right about the large Navy thing. Under Jefferson the Navy was called the "mosquito fleet." He also stated the failed Tripoli War, fought against pirates off of the African coast. Under Jefferson our Navy lost a war to Pirates!
