it was Christ who did it and not the cross. Why do so many where a cross around your neck? If someone killed your son or daughter, would you wear a symbol of the gun around your neck to remind you of them?

Dear Linda has misjudged me. I am a follower of Jesus Christ and I study his word daily and He is a part of my life. I do not however, wear the device that killed Him around my neck nor do I idolize it as did the greeks with their statues.

I agree with you. That cross never did anything for me. They just as easily could have used any other method to kill Him. But there was only one person who sacrificed Himself for the rest of the world. I prefer to remember the Resurrection, not the Crucifixion. Besides which, I want His spirit to be with me, and somehow, I don't think He finds the symbol of His death all that inviting. It's probably not that great of a memory for Him, it feels like wearing a cross would be rubbing it in His face.

You seem to be making some sweeping generalizations. First, idolize seems to be a rather strong term. I don't think any believers worship the cross, bow down to it, or similar things. Are you sure about that?

Second, as to the songs, I have a couple of observations. A lot of hymns blend the allusions of the cross and the Christ Who gave His life as a ransom for many. Besides, songs are not nearly the same as inspired Scripture. Let's give the songwriters the benefit of the doubt and thank them for helping us remember what Jesus did.

I don't wear a cross around my neck but recognize some people do. For some, this is a silent witness as to their Christian faith. I remember a woman who worked at a certain warehouse. She was an immigrant from another country, but the cross she wore led to a conversation in which she testified of her saving faith in Jesus Christ. She was not at all encouraged to share her faith by words, but the message of the cross spoke volumes.

Finally, your last question seems to be more of a rant than a genuine question. Actually it seems to beg the question. No, I wouldn't wear an AK-47 or Uzi if those were the weapons to kill one of my children (they are all alive as of this post). But the cross is different. The world considered death by crucifixion an insult. Roman citizens were never crucified unless they had done something heinous. Jesus, then, suffered the worst of all possible executions--and He did it for us. We can take the symbol of death and make it a picture of LIFE EVERLASTING! The cross, the tomb--He isn't there, He's alive!

Usually Christians don't idolize a cross. I think that's something many get confused about.
Christians wear a cross as a symbol of what Jesus did for everyone. He died for all our sins. He died so we can all go to heaven, and be happy. Because that's what God wants. He wants us to be happy. So its a symbol that we can live our lives for Him because were so thankful for saving us for eternity in a horrible place, where we'd burn forever. Because we all deserve it, you know? No one is perfect. But because Jesus died for everything bad that we do, from putting gum under our desk to killing someone, God forgave us.
And at the church I go to, we don't really sing of the cross. We sing more of what Jesus did for us, why we live our lives for Him. There are a lot of christian songs, you just have to look. And if it does sing of the cross, it just reminds many of what Jesus did.
And I don't think people would wear a gun around their neck if their son got killed. Because it's not the same. Sure they would feel horrible, but people don't wear the cross to feel bad. It's to remind them of what they are living for, what Jesus did.

I hope that helped. But its not like thats it. Sure it probably sounded boring, but you know, it takes time. You can't just love Him with a snap of the finger. Relationships take time. You wouldn't point a person out of a crowd and be like hey were best friends now, and acutally act like it. Right? So yeah..

:] I really hope that helped.

I wear the cross because it symbolizes life to me. I don't focus on Christ's death on the cross, I focus on the fact that he is no longer on it. The cross around my neck tells the world that I belong to the risen King.

We don't idolize the cross! To say that means to actually praise the cross and we don't praise and worship the cross itself. Christians give praise and worship to Jesus Christ because He died on the cross for the sins of His people so we may have salvation through Him and live eternally in Heaven.

We Christians do not get our salvation from the cross itself, but through Jesus Christ who died on the cross! Be informed; read the bible and your questions will be answered - :)

Do you mean like The Old Rugged Cross?

"O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary."

Please don't ridicule what you don't understand.
The cross has been used for centuries to identify those who would give up their lives for their belief in their God, and many did.

What I detest is people who wear the cross and do not respect what it stands for. Yes, it has a meaning, and if you'd do a little soul searching, you'd find the answer on your own.

What I want to know is why Christians idolize the Bible and not Jesus Himself.

Oh yes, Bibliolatry is sinful too...
