That is so American, to be annoyed by somebody saying something as innocent as "Oh, my God!" Really, you won't believe me and you'll hate me for saying this, but the more I read some of Yahoo's Questions and Answers the more I have to agree with most people *in the western world* that Americans are weird.

Isn't oh my gosh just as bad? I mean what is "gosh"? Everyone really knows that it's a substitute for god. Just like heck. Or poop - poop is a 4 letter word synonymous with the s word, but saying "poop" doesn't fool anyone. Gosh is the same as god in my book.
And who's to say that when I say Oh my God I'm talking about your god anyway. Perhaps you should ask why people say things like "Jesus H. Christ!" when they are upset.

Why do you care about what other people say?
When most people say "oh my god," they are not thinking "how can I best offend your deity?" but something in the colloquial sense. God and gosh are interchangeable, which should tell you something about the word usage and connotative meaning.
Chill out. Even I say it, and I'm an atheist (It's just a habit when I see something surprising or silly)

Gosh is still taking the lord's name in vain. If you had uttered Gosh 30 years ago, you would have been looked at with disgust by the religious.

You are absolutely correct. Using the Lord's name in vain is very wrong, and I can't believe how many Christians do this. If it is someone I am close to, I correct them. I figure it's better for them to feel a little insulted by me than for them to continue this sin.

So the intention changes just because you say "gosh" instead of "God"? No, not really.

I know. I mean it just doesn't make sense. If you do believe in Him, then you shouldn't be throwing His name around. And if you don't believe in him, then from that point-of-view, how is saying the name of a (supposedly) non-existent being signify surprise or shock or whatever? I mean, that would be like, equivalent to going around saying "Harry Potter!"
I mean, come on. What's wrong with saying "Oh my word" or "Oh my goodness" or "Oh my gosh"? Or do they think they're too cool for that?

Are you sure?
If you say gosh, don't you go to heck for it?
Also, some of us are not religious, so the rules don't apply :)

Because everyone wants God for himsef/herself. All are being selfish. No one ever thinks to belong to God!
