Gone are the days of Eastern,Pan Am,TWA,Braniff and a meal in flight.
In my younger days when I flew TWA,Delta and Eastern I found
meals to be satisfactory.

I've never flown Spirit.

I was not impressed by AirTran at all, not terrible but if there is only a small price difference I definitely go for Delta instead.

JetBlue is decent. You get your own tv screen and real live tv, plus you get to choose from a nice selection of snacks. I would fly them a lot more but I moved to a city they don't cover...

I used to be a big fan of Spirit and Jet Blue - They are not so useful anymore. Most of the other airlines have matched their low fares. That said- the actual flying experience was fine. No frills but because they are smaller I found their customer service and general attitude to be friendlier. I wouldn't hesitate to fly with any of them if the price is right. Air tran even has a business class (for an extra 30-75 each way )
