No matter how much you try to protect them they will learn swear words. In school one hears a swear every two seconds. You can protect her by not letting her hear songs that have swear words but I am sure she will hear them somewhere else. The music now a day is not innocent and the kids today are losing their innocence at an early age. She will hear swear words in other places but you have to teach her that she can't repeat or use them. That is all I can tell. A ten year old should not hear songs with swear words because they have a tendency to copy and say what they hear. The ipod could be something to entertain her or something that will affect her negatively. I hope this helps.

What do you think, seriously? What I mean is this: No body NEEDS to know those words. They weigh down on you inside, and as a kid make you afraid to think about them for fear of saying them out loud.
But just becuase your little sis is getting an ipod, that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. What you can do is be the best influence you can be to her; I promise she will thank you later in life.
Kids need to be prevented from bathroom language as long as possible. It is not only harmful, it is dishonoring to our Lord and Savior. Call me nuts, but that's my opinion. Take it or leave it, but I think maybe you could buy her some songs that do not have bad words in the lyrics.
I know Hannah Montana is really popular right now, and as far as I can tell, the lyrics to her songs are wholesome.
Remember, you cannot control her by any means, but you can help her have a happier childhood. Please take my advise.

Ps. looking back, it doesn't seem I have directly answered your question. Here is the direct answer: NO, I don't think 10 year olds are old enough to hear music that has swear words.

Hmmm. At 10, they are already aware that those words exist and know well what they mean.
If you're trying to be a little bit careful, but don't want to restrict your kids like a controlling parent, listen to the music and pass judgement for yourself.
If it's something that you can listen to and not mind the swears, then it's ok. If not, then no.
But be open minded because I know what it's like for my parents to totally forbid me to listen to the music that I loved and I was miserable listening to what was forced upon me.
Think about when you were a kid. You may not like the type of music, but just be cautious and do what you know is right.
And hey! They're kids. Let them enjoy life and jam out while they still can. lol
Good luck! Hope everything turns out well.

I think music with swear words should be banned -- period! It has nothing to do with age. It's a matter of decency. It's just too bad that music has to be ruined by the so-called lyrics. There is a lot of modern music that doesn't contain swear words. Your sister should only be allowed to listen to "clean" music.

It all depends. If the child is mature enough to hear the swear words at this age and know not to use them inappropriately then its really not a big deal. They're going to hear the words and learn them eventually. If your sister hears the words just make sure she knows they are bad words and not to be used.

I think that 10 years old is still too young to be listening to music with bad language. Kids that age are still learning a great deal from others, and they might think it's okay to start talking like that.
It's cool that your sister is getting an IPOD. Maybe you should recommend to your parents that every now and then they monitor what she is listening to.

It depends. Some songs use swear words here and there but still have a pretty pretty benign message. Those songs that are 90% swear words and degrade women, promote violence etc. In that case NO WAY Jose! Maybe when they are 18, but not in my house.

No, I think it is a parents job to protect there children as long as they can. I'm sure she's heard swear words before but getting her an ipod where it is available is just not in her best interest.
