I have Replaced the Engine and Transmission and want to buy a new Transfer Case. But there are three models numbers and I have no clue which one I have. The three models are Model Number 247, 249, and #NV242.

Its a NP249. My Jeep has the same transfer case, and the little tag on the back of the case says NP249. Its a little circular tag. Crawl under your jeep and look.

The NV242 transfer case is the Selec-Trac model, if you crawl under your jeep and look at the back of the T-Case there should be the tag and look for sure, but if its the NP247 replace it, they're prone to failure and are expensive to work on.

Here's a site that cover's T-Cases http://www.4x4review.com/tech/tCase-spotters-guide/default.asp.

Sometimes it's hard to get the t-case into neutral. It's usually just a dead zone between the gears but because of slop in the linkages the gears usually holding on with the skin of their teeth in the neutral setting. That's why you are still able to move. leave it in neutral and you'll fry the t-case for sure. NEVER use t-case neutral unless you're sure that it truely works. You mechanic is hoping that you'll come back complaining of a clicking noise under the truck or it lurches when you turn or it's slippery out. That's why he said it was ok.
