As Submariner put it, and he pretty much summed it up, Chief is the expert of his particular rate (E7 Navy). I was an Air Traffic Controller Chief (E7) in the Navy and the LCPO (Leading Chief Petty Officer) of Air Traffic Control before I was medically retired. Moving up in the Navy, even when I was a BM (Boatswain's Mate), if there was a technical question that noone knew the answer to, well, "You go ask Chief."

Although I was in the army I would have to say that overall the Navy treats the E-7's with the most respect. The navy chief, upon selection to that group, wears a different uniform and has an authority unheard of in the other services. Navy chiefs remind me more of the warrant officers than enlisted members.

In the Navy an E-7 Is a Chief Petty Officer. They are given a massive amount of authority compared to an E-6 like myself. THEY are the Expert, their recommendations are generally taken. They are the leadership on the boat, not the Officers, the Chiefs are. But at the same time with the responsibility well, you can probably see where I'm going with that. But a Chief is only as good as his guys. I'm the Chiefs LPO (Leading Petty Officer) We ram heads nearly daily. Sometime I win, sometimes he wins, but in the end we keep each other out of the Sh*ts.

In the navy there are no "E7's." The navy has Chief Petty Officers. The Chief is the backbone of the navy. Navy Chiefs are expected to tutor junior officers. Chief have incredible authority and any officer with an ounce of brains will consult his Chief before making a major decision.

Army E-7's. Sergeant First Class. Bigger paycheck, option to live off-post, get to sit at a desk and stare at a computer screen. Bigger repsonsibilities. I.E. Platoon Sergeant. They run an entire platoon for crying out loud. In my case, he's not only the platoon sergenat but he is also the Motor Sergeant. Answers directly to the 1st Sergeant. No thank you. I will pass on that one. That's why I'm going Warrant.

I just happen to be a retired E7.
No real difference in benefits unless your individual post has a Top Gun Club, but I think those were kinda phased out.
Mostly I would say a lot more responsibility and a lot more respect.
Wouldn't know how anyone treats their E7's I suppose we were treated like E7's.

Some of the added benefits would include things like separate birthing aboard the ships as well as dining facilities and better food aboard ships. Greater respect, pay and, should you decide to get out, greater job opportunities -- teaching certificates for E-7s and above should you choose to go that route. Which service? I dunno, tough call. I think the Marine Corps followed closely by the Navy.

E-7(Gunnery Sergeant) are one of the most respected ranks in the marine core, they are clearly more respected by peers, and suburbanites than mostly any other rank, to include commission officers.

I was an E7 in the Army. We were the real troop pushers. And known to most as 'God' It wasn't too bad. Had a better position and more authority is all.

Ultimately it would come down to the individual unit the E7 is in.
