In my opinion no she doesn't need a cell phone because she's too young and she also won't be able to pay the bill. I could see her having a cell phone for an emergency purpose but other then that she has other ways of contacting people (in person, email, letter, regular phone).

Not really. I wouldnt give my kid a cell phone until they get to high school or start driving, I think they might need one then but my 13 yr. old cousin just got one for Christmas and she already ran up the bill text messaging after she was of course told not too...so, prolly not a good idea.

My cousin got a cellphone at age 10. In my experience, they don't really use it. But, if you can afford it, there are prepaid phones available. There are also the children phones from cingular. It only allows you to call four people. The police and three set numbers I believe. Also, it might be good to get the child a phone in case of emergencies and for use while they are out and about.

There's a big difference between a need and a want. If she needs one, I would ask why? Why does a 10 yr old need a cellphone?
If she wants one, that's another thing. It's good to learn at a young age that you don't always get what you want.

if u want her 2 have an emergancy cell-phone 2 where she can only call the number u give her(duh-yes), but if she can call anyone she wants no, she might call strange people, she might buy something from a calling vendor(think about it), that cellphone will become her life. U will never get 2 spend as much time together, shell always be texting(that will raise te bills through the roof).
hope this helps!!!

Depends what the use is for. If shes just talking to her "BFF"s, then no.
If she is involved in a lot of after school activities or stays at friends houses often, then yes, I would give her one. But first, make sure it is a responsible 10 year old that won't charge a $500 dollar phone bill.
*cough*..

Psh. No, they really don't. I got mine at 13, and I didn't need it. Definitely should wait until the age of a bout 15-16 at the youngest, in my opinion.
Phones are more of a status symbol for kids than an actual communication tool. Plus they text in class A LOT. I'm a senior in high school, and not a day goes by that I don't see at least 3 kids in class texting. It's a nasty habit to get into.
Yeah, I do it too.
Fact is, kids should wait until they're holder for phones. They really don't need them.

no ten year old "needs" a cell phone. no one really "needs" a cell phone. i don't think anyone should get a cell phone until they're holding a decent job, and can pay their own bills. [after they've graduated college/university].
but heyy; i got my cell phone when i was ten years old[x so who am i to say.? but i'd like to think i was more responsible then an average ten year old kid. [i'm fourteen now]. but i walked home from school and had a single mother who worked late hours and needed to keep in contact with her two kids.
but really... No.[x

I think that if she is responsible with it, it would be a good idea to get her a cell phone. My sister (who's 10) has one and she uses it for emergencies and to keep in touch with friends. Once she got lost in Disneyland, and it would've been really hard to find her if we couldn't call her. It's a good safety precaution to take.
hope this helps :)

They make phones especially for younger kids; I can't remember the name of the thing, but the parent programs four numbers into it for one of each of its four buttons (ex. home, grandma's house, the babysitter's, and the school) and it also has an emergency button. That's as much of a cell phone as any 10 year old needs.
