The first and second generation Sigma pistols had a rocky start and developed a bad rep due to a few design flaws, and were somewhat notorious for breaking their firing pin. They copied the Glock pistol so closely that the slides could fit on either pistol, and several people derisively refered to the Sigma as a "SWOCK". Eventually S&W had to pay an undisclosed amount to Glock for copyright infringements. The current 3rd generation Sigma is a good value for the money, most of the problems have been corrected with the only real criticism remaining is the trigger pull is both a bit heavy and sproingy at the same time, and takes practice to get use to. S&W has a lifetime warranty and continues to sell them, if they were as bad as the internet gun snobs would want you to believe, they would have been dropped from production long ago. It's sold as a $300 range budget gun, so comparing it to the Glock, Springfield XD, or the newer Smith and Wesson M&P is like comparing a Hyundai accent to a Toyota camary or Honda accord and then complaining it's not as refined. For what it's worth, I owned a 2nd generation Sigma 40cal., had three striker breaks in less than 2000 rounds, S&W replaced it for free with the newest 3rd generation Sigma, since then I've probably shot in excess of 6,000 rounds without any malfunctions. While it's not my favorite pistol, it's quite adequate for what I expect of it.

I have a later model Sigma in .40 cal and have had no problems. It was a used weapon, being phased out by a local police dept. I had a new barrel fitted into the gun, and have really enjoyed it. Once I got used to the trigger pull, I could really cut some nice holes in the center of the target. Over the last few years I have fired at least 800 rounds through this weapon and have had only one feed jam issue due to a bent mag lip. Not the guns fault ( it was during a combat qual. and when I kicked the magazine out it hit the concrete ) I am not a big fan of S&W but I can't complain about this one. Maybe I just got a good one by mistake.

RE:
I just bought a S&W Sigma 40 cal & went shooting yesterday...?
Several people said the Sigma was a bad gun. Does anyone know of the reputation? One guy said there has been several striker problems.

My first handgun was the Sigma in .40. After the first month or so every third round would fail to extract and/or fail to feed. After I had a gunsmith take a look at it and adjusted the extractor, I put another 20 round through it (with no problems) and the same thing but every other round started to go. 4 months after I go it I traded it in for a Beretta. I also got tired of the .40caliber round. I much prefer 9mm and .45acp.
I never had an issue with the striker of course I did not keep it long.
I will never buy a S&W auto again.
Asquared - Actually from what I understand that is what we armed the Afgan police with if I am not mistaking...lol.

I fired a .40 Sigma at the S&W range, and hated it. As soon as I asked to try it, the guy behind the counter chuckled and told me I was going to hate it. This was of course in Mass where triggers have to be 10 pounds on new guns, and that heavy pull combined with the Sigma trigger is the worst I've ever seen. The gun balanced nicely and fit my hand well, which is one of its main selling points. However, I wouldn't feel confident carrying that gun. I noticed duty holsters for it in the shop and laughed, just hoping that I never work for a department that issues them.

The Sigma is pretty much a Glock clone. If you are going to get a clone might as well get the real thing.

Personally I think S&W is surviving strictly on it 's name, and past glory . The quality of their guns is such that I would NOT even accept one as a gift. This includes revolvers and autos.
