King is a brass company owned by Conn-Selmer. Their focus is brass instruments, mainly their trademark trombone. I've seen maybe one or two King flutes in my career, which tells me they're not widely popular or recommended:(
I do suggest you talk to your band director about flute brands to see what they prefer, and the brands recommended above--I however must disagree with Jupiter and Blessing brand flutes. I can't tell you how many times I've repaired both flute brands. I don't think they're high quality--maybe suitable for a beginner who is looking to upgrade in a few years. I'm still on the fence about Armstrong--sometimes I've seen good ones and sometimes I've seen really bad ones.
I definitely agree with Yamaha and Gemeinhardt flutes. They have tons of student and intermediate flutes that are VERY high quality and often last a student through high school. Best of all, you can find a lot of them used!

King no longer produces flutes or clarinets. The Conn-Selmer flute division is now Armstrong and Emerson. There's only one flute left in the Selmer-USA catalog and none in the Artley. Avanti has two models.
King wasn't always a division of Conn-Selmer and back when they were a separate company they made everything (just like Selmer).
In those days; there were beginner, intermediate, and advanced flutes that competed 1:1 with the Selmer offerings. The models were Cleveland, Tempo, and Masterpiece
A Cleveland is about equal to a Bundy, a Tempo is about equal to the Signet. The King Masterpiece couldn't compete with Selmer Paris and Selmer Omega of the time so there aren't many around. In 1976, I played on a King Masterpiece flute that was 24K gold - I picked the Selmer Omega instead. The King was too silent and "woody" for my taste then -- I wish I had that flute now.
Bottom line - an old King Cleveland is about the same as an old Selmer Bundy. Neither is great but they are ok to learn on or tool around with. A King Masterpiece is worth rehabbing and spending money on.
For new student level flutes; Gemeinhardt, Armstrong, Jupiter, Pearl, and Yamaha have the market. Upper end flutes can be many thousand and include Altus (mine), Muramatsu, Miyazawa, Brennan, etc... reaching upwards and beyond $10K
Trombones on the other hand: King is the name to have and an old model 2B or 3B can be very valuable indeed.

RE:
is king a good flute brand?
I now play the trombone in my high school band, however, the instrument I first began playing was the flute. I ended up selling my flute to pay for a new trombone. I would like to buy a flute but I am not sure what brand to get. I know that King makes excellent trombones and I have found some...

Geminhardt used to be good, and made in Elkhart, Indiana. Since then the name was sold to a no name Chinese factory and are made with cheap metal and are no longer durable. When I first started I played my mom's geminhardt from when she was in band (30 years it was already someone else's before she got it) and it was very nice, but that was the old geminhardt not the cheap ones made today. I know you probably never have heard of it but my flute is a Hunter and I prefer it over the Yamaha, pearl, and other brands. Also get a open hole flute because a closed hole wont last you very long. Some brands that are pretty good are Yamaha, hunter, and some Pearl models.

Havent heard of that brand sorry! Some good Flute beginner brands are Yamaha, Armstrong, Gemeinhardt, Jupiter and Blessing! You could also try and hire the flute and take it to a Flute teacher for them to check it out! But I would stick with the above brands!
