I've looked on ebay and they sell huge packages ranging from $1000+ and googling Canon 40D brings up camera bodies starting at $419. Ritzcamera has it for $1200.. others for much more... Ebay looks most promising, but what is the catch? Does anyone know what to look for specifically when buying a camera?

Many of us trust and recommend B&H Photo. I have been using them for many years without a single problem. B&H Photo is available through a link at Yahoo! Shopping, www.bhphoto.com or at 1-800-622-4987. See also

Beach Camera is another excellent company.

Dr. Sam's info is good.
If the price looks too good, chances are you are dealing with a schmuck and will end up paying more, receiving equipment that doesn't have a warranty in the U.S., receiving the wrong equipment and then the company disappears, not receiving any equipment, ... If a new 40D camera body is selling for less than $1100, buyer beware! It's either used, stolen, or you're dealing with a schmuck dealer.

EBay can be a can of worms due to the above problems. B&H Photo has good prices and are a reputable dealer. They will offer many packages which one may suit your needs. You may want to buy individual pieces like a body and a general purpose zoom lens. The body + lens packages are generally a bit cheaper than buying separate pieces.

Buy it directly from Canon online. That's how I do it, now during the holidays they have HUGE savings, so hurry.
