we decided not to go out, because it's too cold where we live and all the bars and clubs are expensive and crowded. but staying in sounds a bit boring too since we usually are homebodies. does anyone have any suggestions for the two of us? if we do stay in, any creative and festive ways we can still celebrate together without it being just a normal night in? =) thanks everyone!

From a male standpoint, I'd say just focus on unusually appealing (to him) sex. :) Just make sure he doesn't get too drunk to be up for it.
For a New Year's Eve hook -- well, how often have you had your New Year's kiss naked?
Really, there aren't that many other alternatives, since they mainly involve watching fake-wild parties on TV.
Other than that -- New Year's Eve is a noisy holiday. Play your favorite music more loudly than usual. Have an in-house two-person dance party. Watch his favorite noisy war movie with him. Stuff like that.
