I grew up around the guns and I am very responsible. I have always been against guns to be honest, but I have family members that get me involved (through no will of my own) into a craziness fit only for the Jerry Springer show.

So my question is, "should I purchase a firearm or something like a BB gun that just looks real (if that's possible.)

My secondary question is which are my options for each decision... websites that I can search price etc would be helpful.

The only exclusion I make is that I don't want a revolver, thanks in advance.

let me clarify. I grew up with my father, step-father, grandfather and great grandmother carrying concealed handguns here in NC. They were all under permit and legal.

I am quite capable and willing of not only handling a firearm but discharging one as well.

I am morally opposed to hand gun ownership but that doesn't mean that my mom's crazy ex boyfriends are (I am 26.)

My moral opposition to hand guns must be weighed with my interest to protect my family; wife, daughter and son.

Brian V is doing a good job actually giving me info, but I want to stay away from shot guns/rifles.

I want a handgun so that I can keep it away from my children.

Jrob,

If you are not already very familiar with semi-automatic handguns, and if you are not willing to invest a considerable amount of time and money learning to handle one properly, you need to get a revolver.

Since you are not a firearms enthusiast, I figure it is safe to say that you will buy the gun, load it and never fire it unless your Mom's crazy boyfriend comes through the door. Revolvers are much more forgiving of that kind of neglect.

And since you don't like firearms in the first place, you probably will not wish to spend the money necessary to purchase a high quality semi-automatic. You can get a very good used medium frame S&W .38 SPL revolver for about one third of what you will pay for a good semi-automatic.

Forget about bb guns, and other replicas, they will only get you killed.

If you are adamant about getting one of those ugly flatguns, you are on your own.

First of all, fake guns are useless, except as a blunt insturment.....a job itself better suited to a baseball bat.
A fake gun will get you shot by someone with a real gun.
They are for collecting only.

If you are "morally opposed to handguns, perhaps you should consider moving away from these radical elements of your family. If they make you concerned for your and your childrens safety, you'd be better off away from them.

As far as children and guns, children are as likely to find and try to play with a handgun as they are a shotgun or rifle.
You have to rely on a trigger lock of some kind, or keep the firearm in a gun safe when you aren't actually carrying the weapon. Above all you must educate you children on the subject of being safe around guns, and have enough influence over them to enforce your safety rules.

Have you considered a Taser?
Maybe two Tasers?
I'm a personal proponent of handguns for protection myself, but your reluctance and the nature of your situation, make me think perhaps you should consider some other solution besides a gun.

Gee, it sounds like you aren't morally opposed to handguns after all!
You must be aware that a large segment of the US public own handguns, and it shouldn't come as a surprise that they aren't all sociopaths. Protecting yourself and your loved ones, even with lethal force when needed, is the most basic of human rights. A BB gun that looks real is a good choice if you're looking to get yourself killed, and the fact that it isn't a "real gun" will offer you no legal or real protection. Since autoloaders take a lot of practice and commitment for proficiency, you really should reconsider your stance on revolvers, as something like a 38 Special (or larger) would fit your needs best.

I'm not sure where you are coming from. If you just want a gun to brandish, wave around in front of people to scare them during these "craziness fits" FORGET IT. If thats the case you are not responsible. Using "fake" guns to "scare" people may land you in bigger trouble with the law (brandishing a fascmile weapon), or, in worse case scenario with you injured. If someone attacks you and all you can do is point a fake gun at them and make "bang bang" noises with your mouth, I can only hope for your sake you filed the front sight off so it doesn't hurt when your attacker shoves it up your backside

On the other hand, if you're looking for a firearm for personal defense consider this...

It is generally if not universally accepted, if you are going to pull a gun on someone in self-defense you damn well better be willing to shoot and possibly kill-to-stop your attacker.

Its probably a good idea you simply avoid firearms all together, and do the rest of us a favor in doing so. I don't think anyone that is 'against guns' should be brandishing a firearm.

First, answer the question of why you want to purchase a gun, real or fake. If your answer is to shut the mouths of your family, then don't waste the money. Don't let their influence force you to purchase a fake gun that really serves no purpose.

If you want to protect your family, then purchase a gun for protection. Educate yourself, train, and be responsible. Do not hide it from the kids. If they are curious, let they handle it under your supervision. If the kids are old enough to shoot, then this could be quality time for you and them.

Good luck.

Check out a gun show in your area so that you can look at a lot of options under one roof. You will not only find real handguns, but also pellet guns as well. You can talk to the dealer, see prices and get a better idea of what you might like. Also, there are many accessories to look at such as a safe to keep your handgun out of your children's hands! Good luck!

Buying a fake firearm is the LAST THING you should be thinking about. It will serve no good purpose nor will it do anything but get you into some major legal trouble that you won't be able to explain away....Especially if you have a Jerry Springer dysfuntional family. It will only take a phone call to the Police and the results will haunt you the rest of your days.Be smarter than the rest of your family and avoid buying ANY firearm, REAL or FAKE!!

First of all you should stow the "moral opposition" to hand guns, it's just un-American. Secondly for home defense I'd go for a nice pump 12 gauge. A Remington 870 or maybe a Mossberg. They're cheap, they're efficient and I can almost guarantee the bad guy will not get up to bother anyone again

One needs registration and permit to carry, sell and purchase a weapon in Turkey. Those are not easy procedures since it requires a detailed back ground check and clearance from criminal records Of course, there are illegally sold and used ones but nobody is dumb enough to sell or purchase them at newspaper stands. The penalty may vary from cash to time in prison, Therefore, the one's you have seen are definitely toys or replicas.

After reading your question a couple times to make sure I was actually seeing what I was reading, I have to say you have no business owning a fake or a real handgun. Your best bet would be memorise the numbers 911 and let people above your pay grade handle things.
