at normal running speed say about 45-50 mph,it should be running about 23-2500 rpm,s give or take a few hundred,if its running higher than normal rpm,s then there is something wrong with it ,its probably slipping or not shifting out of 3,rd gear or going to 4,th,or even lock up,have a transmission shop test drive it they can tell you in a minute if its right or not, good luck with it,have a good new years,

At idle it should be around 650-800 RPM (revolutions per minute). Your idle speed should be posted on an emissions sticker under the hood. As you give it gas, the RPM should increase, then dip as you shift gears (higher gears let the motor rev lower, saving wear and gas).
The "red-line" (part of the tachometer that has numbers in red) is the maximum that you should allow the engine RPM to go, and for engine life, you should never go near the redline numbers.
In general driving, your RPM should be between apprx 1000 to 3000 RPM with a 6 cyl, maybe up to 4000 RPM with a 4 cyl.
These numbers are approximate, and with an automatic transmission. With a manual trans, the tendency would be for higher numbers. All these numbers are for mellow/gas saving driving.
If the tach looks like it is going too fast, let's say 4500 RPM at 45 or 50 MPH, it could mean something like your Automatic trans is not shifting properly, or your lockup torque converter is faling to lock.
If your idle speed is way below that sticker number, you could have plugged fuel injectors, dirty throttle body, worn spark plugs or a bad sensor (AIS for example), or bad/worn spark plug wires or distributor cap/rotor.

On a normal take-off, (with 4 speed) you should see the RPM rise and drop 4 times. first time when it goes into second gear. Second time when it goes into third gear, third time when it goes into forth (overdrive) gear, and forth time when it goes into torque converter lock- up. This is on the 3.3-3.8 engine The 3.0 comes out with 3 speed or 4 speed which ever is ordered new. All 3.3&3.8's come only with 4 speeds. And the engine temp. has to be above 140 degrees for the lock- up converter to be enabled. And when you let off the gas or touch the brake, the converter should go out and back in lock-up. As a rule of thumb, you should be running 2000 RPM's at 60 MPH. With the 4 speed trans. Maybe a little less with the 3 speed trans.
