There were so many things that He could have taught them to do, and yet, this seemed to be of the most importance.

Luke 11:1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

Because prayer is communication with God. They wanted that same communication that they saw Jesus have.
Communication = relationship!

Glad to know you are a good scholar of the ancient Greek Bible. Yes, you are right. There is no such term as "Trinity" in the Bible, it was coined later after the death of the disciples of Jesus. But the concept was there since the beginning of the Christian Church. Jesus told the disciples to go and preach unto all the world to every nation and baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. He also said that He and his Father are one. Then He said that after He went back to heaven, He was going to send another Comforter, Who will teach them everything that He told them, so that they do not stay as "orphans". Some people think the "Holy Spirit" is like a force or "wind". How can an imaterial thing or just a force, can stop a person being "orphaned" when his Father is taken away. When my father died, my uncle adopted me, so I was no longer an orphan. The Holy Spirit is a personality Who can feel the grief and can take the place of Jesus teaching the disciples and everybody else who will listen to Him. You must have missed reading the words of Jesus : Every sin can be pardoned, sin against the Father , and sin against the Son, can be pardoned, but sin against the Holy Spirit is an unpardonable sin. Why don't you read Genesis Chapter 1 where the Holy Spirit was working together in creating the heaven and earth, and God said: "Let us make man in our image" and not "I am going to make man in my image!" Nobody will be able to fully comprehend the whole truth about God and the Trinity. The Bible mentions that even the angels are still trying to understand the mystery of God. Throughout eternity we will be studying about that continuously. Even here on earth, scientists have been studying the earth for thousands of years, but we have scratched only a the surface. Trying to understand about God, is more impossible than trying to teach a mouse, I mean real mouse, or a monkey, how the computer functions, even if you can spend your whole life time trying to do it. But there is enough materials in the Bible to tell us what we need to know about God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in their work and co-operation in the Creation and Redemption of human beings. But for those who decide not to believe, not even the whole angels of heaven can convince them!

There is alot in what was said in His showing them how to pray.

Luk 11:2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

Holy is thy name
"thy kingdom come", its coming here to earth, why would anyone want to leave?
"thy will be done", and HIS WILL be done
"heaven and earth", he controls both

Luk 11:3 Give us day by day our daily bread.

He is the Bread of Life, eat it daily

Luk 11:4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

"forgive us our sins", and we are on repentance
"forgive us our debts", he does so should you
"lead us not into temptation", HE doesn't Satan is the temptor.
"deliver from evil " which is Satan this is a promise

They wanted to know the right way to pray-- And to honor God in their praying. Where as we can pray any way we want to God, but to pray in HIS name, this is something we should always remember why God told us to do this-- because when we pray in His name, we are praying and asking Him according to His will. Giving Him the honor. We know that it is only in HIS name we should pray and can pray! Jesus is the only mediator between God and man as the Bible says. It is important to pray asking all things in HIS name and giving Him the praise and thanks He deserves. Prayer is extremely important and powerful!

Jesus says:
John 15:16
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

Also, when praying we should not do it for attention, or so loud we want others to hear us and think we are holy....that is why Jesus then explained how it is good to pray in quiet. Our hearts and minds should be fixed on God alone- not on ourselves. And God knows our hearts!

Obviously after watching Jesus pray they realized their inadequate prayer techniques and wanted His advice. Jesus was a master prayer and He spent most of every day in conversation with His Father in Heaven.

Till then they were preying only on fish. Perhaps they wanted a change. They never knew that prayer begins in one's heart and is nothing but a communication with God for which none didn't need a tutor.

Maybe they wanted to pray according to Gods will. I am not sure if there is any inclination that it was most important, but it does has teaching in it and God does want us to pray according to his word.
I heard a Pastor pray like this, "Father we come to your throne of grace in our time of need, I pray that you will enlighten us and strengthen us in the word of your grace." The bible says to cast your cares on the Lord, for he cares for you, in the greek language(cast) means to slam dunk them on the Lord.
I sometimes tell the Lord that I present my body to Him because the bible says we are his, I ask for strength and wisdom (because the bible says to ask for wisdom if you need it.)

They were even more ignorant than you are; they asked other things as well (it was not the most important thing), and were taught things they didn't ask. Had you been there to advise them we wouldn't have The Lord's Prayer.

a prayer is not just words ....if it was... no instructions would be needed.....it is a combination of things....you notice that they ask ..but did it tell you exactly how to do it.... not exactly....a prayer is asking to get what you want..... that only works if all the parts are right...and combined with true intent.... some say prayers are only answered if it is gods will and that's how you should pray in gods name if it is gods will.... why bother... if the prayer does not influence the out come.... instruction is needed when the out come can be influenced....

Exactly. It shows you just how important praying regularly is. And who better to ask how to pray than the Son of God Himself, right?
